Hello! And welcome to my interpretation of a story called [[the umbrella]] Where the [[giant...]]This is a story with no pictures. So... use your imagination, and [[hold on tight]] It was a cold, stormy, and dark fall evening. Golden leaves were floating in the air, swirling in all directions, with no rhyme or reason. [[Whooooosh!]] On the paved sidewalk outside of a small house, rested a [[red umbrella]] Following its nose, or maybe in seach of shelter from the elements, a small dog with a shaggy, black coat and a button nose found the brightly coloured umbrella. It stood out amongst the dreariness of the street, illuminated by the lone street light up above. What happened next is so [[wild]], it couldn't be made up! Oh no! The wind's picked up. The swirling! The rain! And the dizziness! The little pup opened his eyes, and to his amazement, he found himself [[floating]] above the clouds. All of a sudden, the rain had stopped and the soft warmth of the sun slowly began drying his matted, black coat. But what was that in the distance? No! It couldn't be! A tall, speckled... giraffe? [[swooooop!]]Woah! That was close. A flock of flamingos almost took the little dog out! That could have been disastrous. One wrong move, and the little dog could have ended up [[down below]][[sharp-toothed...]][[merciless]]crocodiles live! Good thing the little dog held onto that umbrella tightly as he swirled through the air. But wait! The wind is [[picking up]]...A flurry of commotion and that feeling like your dropping down a really big rollercoaster, and then the little dog regained his composure. But where was he [[now?]]He heard the waves crashing loudly below him, as he slowly fell from the sky. Slow-moving, prehistoric shells were moving aimlessly below, unaware of his impending landing. Had he reached the [[Galapagos Islands]]? But just as he was about to make contact with the golden sand underneath, a gust of wind came back, and a blinding streak of lightning flashed in his eyes. Is there a [[pattern]] occurring? But of course! Where to next? The little dog's freshly warmed coat was yet again feeling the extreme temperatures of the weather. But this time, little [[icicles]] were forming on his flimsy mustasche. Shivering in the cold, and alarmed by the sudden quietude of the landscape, the little dog found himself in the pristine and beautiful home of [[the...]]polar bear! Oh no, those can be vicious! But Mama Bear was waving her hand in a welcoming motion, as if to say hello, while leading her excited cubs back to their den. Before too long, the little pup was [[gone again]]. Hmmm, this was looking familiar. It's the old house! The lone street light! The umbrella had taken the dog around the world and back home, all in what felt like a blink of an eye. Upon landing softly on the wet pavement, the shaggy dog ran off towards the moonlight, leaving the umbrella folded neatly against the house. [[Oh!]]What's this? An umbrella? The orange cat paced back and forth, sniffing the umbrella cautiously... [[The end]].This story is a summarized retelling of The Umbrella, by Ingrid and Dieter Schubert. It is a wonderful teaching tool for the primary grades.
