What is it?
iMovie is a video editing software application developed by Apple Inc. that is available for all macOS and iOS devices. It comes preloaded on most Apple devices and allows easy editing of videos and photos in iMovie projects. Yes-that’s right, you can add photos into your video projects!
Potential Uses
iMovie is great to use for its basic editing functions such as cutting, cropping, rotation and changing the speed of clips. It really shines though with its easy to add effects such as titles, transitions, audio clips and color filters. These well-designed features really add to the professional feel of videos created using the app. There are even options to control for shaky video recordings and background noise reduction. The ability to add a voice recording into your project can also be quite handy when you are considering adding narration to your video. One of the newest features added to the latest release of the app., which is sure to catch the attention of your students, is green-screen effects with the background editable of any video shot in front of a green or blue screen. Videos are produced in mp4 format with high quality options available (up to 1080p) and can directly be uploaded to Facebook or Youtube if desired. All in all, iMovie offers some great features that you generally won’t find in many free video editing software applications. It’s ease of use and the visually appealing effects that can be used will allow you to create videos that will captivate your students in and out of the classroom. Apple also offers free signup to anyone with a Mac product to their Apple Teacher Learning Center where you will find tutorials and step by step guides on how to use iMovie. Addtionally, they have also created a companion book, Everyone Can Create Video, that you might find useful when making use of the software.
