What is it?
Powtoon is primarily a cloud-based software application that can be used to create animated presentations and explainer videos. Using the service requires signing up to create an account or linking existing Google, Linkedin, Facebook or Office365 accounts. Although a cost-free plan is available on Powtoon, much of the content is linked to Pro-accounts, which require a paid subscription.
Potential Uses
Powtoon wins us over with its great graphics and range of different templates that can be used to create animated and lively videos. Although much of the content available on the app. requires a paid-subscription there is enough flexibility with available content to create some great videos. The different styles of videos eg. whiteboard and animated allow for great variety in the types of video you can create. Anyone is able to use a template and edit it to accommodate the vision for their video. The length of clips, sound effects, voice-overs and animated props are just some of the editable features available on this app. Various characters can also be included in your video projects to add a personal touch to your creations. One of the drawbacks of Powtoon apart from the limited content is associated with the publishing of videos. For free subscriptions, HD quality videos are unavailable and you will have to publish your video to Youtube to get access to it as there are no download options on this plan. If you can live without these features then we think Powtoon would be a great tool to add to your repertoire.
Pros:
- Easy to use
- Stunning animated visuals and sound effects
- Variety of animated characters and props
Cons:
- Limited content on free subscription plans
- No HD video output on free subscription plans
- Incompatibility with some internet browsers (Safari)
Technology Requirements
Since the software is cloud-based only a good internet connection and a PC or tablet is required. A mouse and microphone is recommended but not essential.
