Abstract

In their lives outside the classroom, students spend considerable time interfacing with media, and they are receptive to information conveyed in electronic formats. Research has shown that multimedia is an effective learning resource;yet, the logistics are sometimes cumbersome and create opportunities for students to become disengaged. Clipping, annotating, and embedding videos into PowerPoint presentations was found to be a successful method for FCS (Family and Consumer Science) educators to increase student engagement and learning. Seamlessly incorporating multimedia brings the lecture of the past into sync with the technological environment in which students can thrive, employ multiple senses, and make connections with course material and the world.

Annotation

The authors piloted a project in which videos were embedded into PowerPoint presentations used in classes. Their goal was to create illustrative clips (3 per lesson) on salient points identified in educational DVD’s and the internet. They used Camtasia as their video editing software and created videos between 3 and 8 minutes long (the optimal time for videos as revealed after years of experimentation). Students were noted to react positively to the enhanced learning experience and higher levels of engagement as well as attendance was noted in classes. Student feedback in the course evaluation revealed the positive impact that the students felt these multimedia features added. Some students even requested copies of the videos to share with friends and family.
