This device allowed us to view images in simulated \u201c3D\u201d by depicting left-eye and right-eye views of the same scene using two separate images.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historyofinformation.com\/detail.php?entryid=4543\">Pygmalion&#8217;s Spectacles<\/a>, <\/strong>by\u00a0Stanley Weinbaum, 1935: the first book to imagine a model for a modern day VR<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/Sensorama\">Sensorama<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>1962 : called an\u00a0\u201cexperience theater\u201d containing the first self-contained immersive film and experience for the audience<\/li>\n<li>In 1968, computer scientist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amturing.acm.org\/award_winners\/sutherland_3467412.cfm\">Ivan Sutherland<\/a> <\/strong>invented the first known <strong>head-mounted display<\/strong>, <strong>or HMD: the Sword of Damocles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/ise.washington.edu\/facultyfinder\/thomas-a-furness\"><strong>Dr. Tom Furness<\/strong><\/a><\/span> led the development of the first VR cockpit simulator for the US Air Force,\u00a0which was completed in 1971.<\/li>\n<li>Huge leaps in computer science led to the birth of the video game industry and the\u00a0popularization of visual effects (VFX) in Hollywood in the late 1970s and 1980s with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tron\"><strong>Tron<\/strong><\/a> becoming the first \u201cVR\u201d blockbuster in 1982.<\/li>\n<li>In 1984, William Gibson published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/jul\/28\/william-gibson-neuromancer-cyberpunk-books\"><strong>Neuromancer<\/strong><\/a>, a cyberpunk VR novel that introduced the\u00a0concept of the matrix.<\/li>\n<li>In 1985, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrs.org.uk\/virtual-reality-profiles\/vpl-research.html\"><strong>Jaron Lanier<\/strong><\/a> left Atari to work on what would become VPL Research. In 1987, Lanier\u00a0officially coined the term \u201cVirtual Reality,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 1992, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Lawnmower_Man_(film)\"><strong>The Lawnmower Man<\/strong><\/a> was released.
