When I first started this assignment, I had selected a different piece entirely. However, I soon found I wasn’t enjoying the process and also felt uninspired. Subsequently, I changed which Fluxus piece I wanted to perform. I finally settled upon “Paradigm [for Dick Higgins],” which involved selecting an object surrounded by similar items, designating it as a model for all such objects, and isolating its distinct features. Instead of selecting a physical object, I chose a digital one (my desktop VISA folder).
While working on this piece, I started to consider the concepts of information documentation vs. art, which seemed to blur overtime. I soon became overwhelmed by the amount of information I could find or generate that was specific to my “folder model,” as well as the endless ways this information could be represented. In the end, I chose newhive as a platform for my finalized work since it provided a visual way to culminate any data relevant to my project.

Great job Nikki!
Thanks! 🙂
I kinda like the way that messy visual impact combine with mostly the black and white colors which makes me feel anxious

This is the video I made with friends that documented my behaviour of “Make a soup”. I selected this theme from the Fluxus book: “Make a soup” in the “Variation #1 on Proposition” by Alison Knowles in 1964.
I really like this. At first it was really strange to see the rocks and then when you brought them in to the kitchen setting I felt even more confused. But there was something weirdly satisfying about watching the rocks being washed (I have no idea why). And I found as I continued to watch the video, it was less about the rocks and more about seeing you execute the process of cooking and actually ‘making soup.’ Really intriguing work!

So I took inspiration from the String Piece and the Stamp Act. The String Piece instructs to tie the audience up, but I chose a picture of myself tied up; the Stamp Act instructs to cover a nude model in stamps.
Hello Maggie,
This is very interesting! I like how stamps slowly builds from the bottom right to go up as if the censorship increased over time! This reminds me of some of weird rules that Korea broadcast/ shows have. In the past, it censored merely chest and genitals but as the time goes on, they even said no exposure of belly button if the person is underaged or can only show half of the nipple at a time.
I choose the Three Lamp Events piece by George Grecht.
The instruction is written in three lines:
On. Off.
Lamp.
Off. On.

This video was taken during my flight. Last year’s Christmas I visited a friend living in Tokyo and came back to school alone. The light in the airplane had been turned off and I wanted to go to the washroom before I went to sleep. but the washroom sign keeps flashing red, which means there was someone else using the wash room. I thought my growing anxiety in this silent but noisy space was interesting so I documented the process.
The Fluxus piece makes me imagine how lamps are being turned on and turned off repeatedly in a dark space full of mirrors, so that the lamps are multiply reproduced. The anxiety is similar to the flashing red light. I could not even focus onto the light because it’s too dark. So it was blurred in the video.
Hey Veronica,
I think the lack of focus really worked in your favor, I feel like it really brought out the feeling of anxiety.
For a Drummer (for Eric)
Drum on something you have never drummed on before.
Drum with something you have never drummed with before.
1966
I found it interesting to see where different sounds came from; which were louder and which were softer.

Hi Katherine,
I really like the energy of this piece and the way it is presented! The variety of sounds created by drumming on different objects is actually quite surprising. I also found it really interesting listening to all of the videos play simultaneously, which sounded quite melodic, versus playing only a singular video!
Hello Katherine,
This is quite interesting to see!
Realizing how plastic bags can be used to produce beautiful or quite nice sound.
Also, that banana and I assume potatoes? sound very good. I am getting calmed by the sound.
I chose to take inspiration from George Brecht’s Drip music.

From Ken Friedman’s section – with a modern technological twist

Hi Violet,
Wasn’t expecting this twist at all but your piece is very clever!! I tried playing the shoe tapping videos all at once – and actually felt a little more nervous than relaxed.
George Brecht – Symphany No. 5

No. 1: Before Hearing
No. 2: Hearing
No. 3: After Hearing
For my work I decided to choose George Brecht’s word event piece from 1961 which basically included the word Exit.
In class last week it was mentioned that this whole Fluxus movement was heavily influenced by Dadaism. From what I have learned the word Dada in itself literally means nothing. And I think that is something I wanted to explore and think about; this idea that can something emerge from what we define as ‘nothing’.
When I first read the word ‘Exit’ in the Fluxus scores I immediately said the word to myself in my head. I decided I wanted to include the aspect of actually saying the word in my piece. And since we have been talking so much about art and technology I wanted to include this notion of exit or exiting within the digital world. So I opened up different accounts/programs and filmed myself ‘exiting’ them. It seems mundane but it made me think about this whole notion of performance and how in our daily lives we are constantly performing or kinds of tasks regardless of how obvious they may seem.

Hey Hareem,
This is so clever – taking something so common in our everyday lives and making the action really stand out. These tasks are so obvious, yet not obvious at all.
Hi Hareem,
This is so interesting!! I love your idea of exiting the digital world, which is not a physical space. And the repetition of the word “exit” is really sending me a strong message.

I chose the Mandatory Happening by Ken Friedman. It wasn’t my first choice, but when I thought about how technology is becoming smarter than us and will soon be able to know how we think, It really creeped me out. It made me think about the topics we have covered about technology and our freedom and inspired me to build off of Friedman.

Guess what?
My patience has finally paid off, thank you newhive

This random thing is inspired by:
Larry Miller’s “See You in Your Dreams”, 1977
and
“Symphony No.6 – The Music of Dreams”(Sort of)
My sister had a dream that she was feeding a cat at the cat food isle in a supermarket, then I showed up out of nowhere and scared the cat away.

While I was watching the video about artist Nam June Paik, I wanted to make a video about the gaze. We are always so exposed to gaze that we receive either consciously and unconsciously that you start to get weird feel that you are being stared at even though you are for sure alone in the room or house. So I decided to create a video where everyone does, looking at the phone on the bed about to go to the bed and feel like we are stared. But when we look around theres just no one. But you feel like you are getting the stare because you are exposed to them. In the end, we will be just like nah thats just weird feeling and let it go.
(Not sure if this is going to upload)

I chose the page 85– finger exercise
perform with fingers 1983
When I start to think of an question, I can’t help fiddling with my fingers. This might inspired me a lot with this assignment. The constant ghosting and the sound of the pointer is a sign of deep anxiety, feeling very uncertain about everything (mainly the future). Especially, comes the midterm weeks, tons of projects and exams drive me crazy, I’ve been anxiety and irritability for the entire weeks. All those feelings actually brings me inspiration to this project.
