  1. The image I chose is a screenshot from my favorite movie, Sonatine(1993, Takeshi Kitano). It shows a gangster member playing games with others using guns & knives. Sonatine is a film about a war between several Japanese mobs, when the boss received the order that told him to halt the troops and wait, the cold blooded-gangsters turned into a huge family, spending their time together as if they are on a holiday. Sadly, the war still exploded in the end. This screenshot is taken right before the peace got broken,

Personally, I feel connected to this picture because of 2 particular reasons:

    1. The quietness, peacefulness in contrast with the intense relationship between the mobs.
As a university student, sometimes it feels like I have to put myself in a very tensed up mental state so that I could be ready for different kinds of school work, everyday issues and etc. When I’m in this state of mind, sometimes a small, peaceful moment can be really appealing and enjoyable to me. I feel connected to this picture because I just love the fact that gangsters and I both appreciate the quietness and peacefulness of life, even when it’s in an intense atmosphere where they could get assassinated by their opponents(or school work).

    2. The warmth of friendship, companionship and love.
In Sonatine, when a bunch of cold blooded-gangsters who make a living out of killing got nothing to do, they kill their time by drinking, singing and playing games. Slowly, they became friends, instead of co-workers that didn’t even talk to each other. It reminds me of my childhood experience of having trouble making new friends. The process of how companionship changes people is another important reason I feel attached to this picture.

    (Sorry for the bad grammar)

  2. Didn’t even remember that we’re supposed to post class notes as well. Welp, at least I have them written down in my notebook, so, better late than never, here they come.

    Class 1, Sept. 5
The one term that I hear a lot in this class is “image”
When it comes to the discussion of “What is an image?”
We learned that image can be a new language and more.
It conveys not only ideas but also experience from both the creator of the image and also the viewer.
Thus, sharing an image is sharing an experience.

  3. Class 2, Sept. 12
Today’s lesson continued the topic we had last week——“What is an image?” but in a more specific, detailed way.

    For example, image is:
    – Visual Depiction
    – Documentation
    – Perception
    – Memory
    – Communication
    – Knowledge
    etc.

From here, we can say that the content of an image is closely related to imagination, which is something that we, as human carrying out since thousands of years ago.
Imagination expresses our desire, culture, freedom, beliefs and so on.

    Thus,
    Human → Imagination → Image

    More to it,
An image does not have to be a picture. As we discussed last week, sharing an image is about sharing the experience, which is something that music/sounds could also bring to us in a more abstract way, in my opinion. This leads to another discussion about the term “Modern Art(Abstraction, Impressionism, etc.)”, which focuses a lot more on the emotion/experience behind the work instead of the form-likeness.

  4. Class 3, Sept. 19
The discussion on “What is an image?” continues.
But this time, we focused on its relation with “reality” and the information it conveys.

First of all, be aware of the fact that think is different from feel.
If we go back to the discussion last week, we learned that a lot of Modern Artwork express ideas rather than simply depicting an object; because theses artworks show the emotion/feeling behind the work.
And because of that, Modern Artwork might not be very “real”. For example, the historical painting always tend to glorify the heroic figures by making he/she taller, stronger, different from normal people. Also in impressionism painting, landscapes can have different colors than they normally do. Not to mention Cubism, Fauvism etc.

On the other hand, Technical Image represents the absolute faith in reality and truth.
With inventions like digital camera and X-ray, truths and history get to be preserved.

    So it’s like:
    IMAGE
    Painting ———————————————————▉—Technical Image

  5. Class 4, Sept. 26
    Image of TODAY
Today’s image contains a lot of information. Different from art, the information of today’s image could have a different form of “power”. Like a twitter picture of someone’s lunch probably has less impact to the viewer than Edouard Manet’s painting, and perhaps less potential to change the world. So in a way, have image lost their power today?

My personal answer to this question is not necessarily.
The image of today sure brings some different things to the society, like:
    – Political propagandas
    – Ethnical questions
    – Trendings
    etc.

I feel like today’s image expresses the idea towards each individual, rather than, say, the whole bourgeois social level. Hence, the power of the image changes based on every viewer’s experience, knowledge and perspective(Contemporary Aaaaaarrrrrrt).

  6. Class 5, Oct. 3
    Art, Technology & Freedom.

Important term: Futurism – A social movement back in 20th century where artists gathered to glorify modernity.

Important name: Fillipo Tomasso Marinetti – A poet, and his futuristic manifesto.
He hates the old, traditional frame of mind(including art), and shows his enthusiasm towards technology, modernity and violence. He wanted to exceed limitation with the power of technology.

Post World War I, inventions like airplane, car, steamboat and railway represent a symbol of time. It shows the risks, the sacrifices we took for the innovation.

    Short note huh.

  7. Class 6, Oct 10
    Image of Today Continues.
Go back to what we discussed earlier, image is representation/visual/depiction/language/expression/indication/documentation.

Every image has two narratives: what actually happened & what is depicted.

An image is always corresponded to a particular worldview. For painting, there’s a gap between what actually happened and what is depicted, but photography erased this gap. But still, as image and technology evolves, the “real” changes accordingly, thus makes us question the very basics of our existence(Matter, reason, culture or even the concept of human itself). This profound uncertainty

Technologies like Tumblr, Vines(eww), Tiktok(EWWW), facebook and instagram, each one creates their own images, thu, different realities emerge.

We believe in technology is going to save us, our confilct/hope is all about our technology, and the image of today is a notion of this belief in technology.
This notion is unique to the image of today, they don’t exist in painting/drawing/printmaking etc., only in the image of today. This doesn’t mean that painting/drawing/printmaking is not capable of depicting the reality, but it means that the connection between real, technology and image is particularly strong in today’s image.

Appropriation of today: copy & paste

So ultimately, image of today is not only representation/visual/depiction/language/expression/indication/documentation and all that we discussed, but also EXPLORATION.

Science fiction? Marvel movies are boring lel

  8. Class 7, Oct 17
    Techonology/Art/Freedom

Weird, didn’t get much comprehensive notes from Class 7, most notes are scattered and unreadable so I’ll probably leave it.

Three important questions to think about:
What is the relation between art and technology?
What is the relation between art and freedom?
What is the relation between technology and freedom?

  9. Class 8, Oct 24
    Technology/Art/Freedom
The discussion continues, but focus more on the “limitation” of freedom between technology and art. There’s always a negotiation between art and technology, between what we want to create and what we can create.
For example, people used to spend hours, days, months even years to try re-create the scenary/portrait that they once saw, but the degree of realism is always limited since they can’t re-create exactly how things once were; howvere, with the invention of camera, such things became easy as clicking a button. Photography later became “the painting of nature”

    – Fluxus
We don’t have a clear definition of what it is, it’s in our daily lives. The way we live our ordinary lives, is ART.

    – John Cage about Silence:
“Sound” has highs and lows, listening to the sound from surroundings, the sounds without composition, without an artist, these sounds make John Cage appreciates life.

    – John Cage’s famous performance 4″33′
An orchestra without any anctual playing, only noises emerge from the player, the instruments, the audiences. John Cage creates this particular space of openness and messiness, makes 4″33′ an work where everybody involved is an artist.

    – Fluxus manifesto — To create the ultimate work of art, where EVERYTHING is art. To make art and life become one.

    – Art and Technology work within the limitation of science, and science operates within the limitation of military? But does it also work the other way around, that Art and Technology work together to change, to innovate science, and military?

  10. Guess what?
My patience has finally paid off, thank you newhive

    and
“Symphony No.6 – The Music of Dreams”(Sort of)
My sister had a dream that she was feeding a cat at the cat food isle in a supermarket, then I showed up out of nowhere and scared the cat away.
