  1. To learn in this class:
How is this new language of images different from what has existed in the past and what implications will this have in the future? How might it be changing the way we think and interact with one another? To what extent does it connect us and to what extent does it divide us? How is the impact different for individuals born into a world with access to this technology versus those who experienced the world before it?
    Some Reflections:
As it was mentioned in class, we are here, but always thinking of “the others” as a result of social media. In my daily life, I see the consequences of this. Because our phones hold a digital reality that connects us to people and information from all over, the physical world in front of our eyes can so easily fade away. And I see this impact affecting people my own age in a huge way but also people my parents’ age as they become the more dominant age group using Facebook. And now I am seeing more and more often toddlers sitting quietly at restaurants with an iPad. These devices are truly addictive and I am so curious to see how this is going to change our future. There are many aspects to this sudden advancement to technology but I am most curious about the social implications, particularly with social media.

  2. Significant Image:
The photo I chose captures me at age 7 on a family vacation at a topless beach in France. I’m striking a pose for the camera, sporting glittery blue high waisted bikini bottoms with no top and clutching a topless barbie in one hand. I remember the novelty of this experience and the joyful curiosity it brought me. I reflect on it now, thirteen years later, as I live beside Wreck Beach, which is clothing optional.
My visits to Wreck have reintroduced me to this concept I once learned in France that “a body is just a body” as I see people of all shapes and sizes around me strip down to nothing. I sometimes see families bringing their kids who chose to explore the beach naked and think back to the freedom I felt myself at their age on the beach in France. I’ve still hesitated to participate myself in shedding my bathing suit, but it does interest me to see the cyclical way this concept of public nudity has been introduced to me.

What is this an image of?
-If i had to guess logically I might say this was created in a soundstage with a variety of lights and water with distortion during the editing process
-If i had to interpret it in some other way like if I had to use it in a context for something I think I would use it to represent time travel.

  4. When I posted my “Image of an Image II” assignment in the group page, one member of the class commented on it, hitting every point I had intended to make. This was so validating. They knew it was about both happiness and sadness but also incorporated nostalgia. I look forward to working with newhive more in my future assignments as it seems to be an effective medium for what I wish to convey.

  7. Oct. 24th Notes – Part One

    Art/Tech/Freedom

    -Art = Knowledge
    -Philosophy does NOT = Understanding
    -No art without technology
-Art makes freedom possible, but also conditions it
-Always using technology to negotiate whats possible

    Process:
    1. Think
    2. Distill
    3. Make Art
this process is messy! It’s not focused on productivity or “successful” art
creativity can happen in a conversation and that why the class is structured the way it is.
They’re challenges, they don’t have to be successful or “art”.
