To learn in this class:
How is this new language of images different from what has existed in the past and what implications will this have in the future? How might it be changing the way we think and interact with one another? To what extent does it connect us and to what extent does it divide us? How is the impact different for individuals born into a world with access to this technology versus those who experienced the world before it?
Some Reflections:
As it was mentioned in class, we are here, but always thinking of “the others” as a result of social media. In my daily life, I see the consequences of this. Because our phones hold a digital reality that connects us to people and information from all over, the physical world in front of our eyes can so easily fade away. And I see this impact affecting people my own age in a huge way but also people my parents’ age as they become the more dominant age group using Facebook. And now I am seeing more and more often toddlers sitting quietly at restaurants with an iPad. These devices are truly addictive and I am so curious to see how this is going to change our future. There are many aspects to this sudden advancement to technology but I am most curious about the social implications, particularly with social media.
Significant Image:
The photo I chose captures me at age 7 on a family vacation at a topless beach in France. I’m striking a pose for the camera, sporting glittery blue high waisted bikini bottoms with no top and clutching a topless barbie in one hand. I remember the novelty of this experience and the joyful curiosity it brought me. I reflect on it now, thirteen years later, as I live beside Wreck Beach, which is clothing optional.
My visits to Wreck have reintroduced me to this concept I once learned in France that “a body is just a body” as I see people of all shapes and sizes around me strip down to nothing. I sometimes see families bringing their kids who chose to explore the beach naked and think back to the freedom I felt myself at their age on the beach in France. I’ve still hesitated to participate myself in shedding my bathing suit, but it does interest me to see the cyclical way this concept of public nudity has been introduced to me.
Day One: https://tmblr.co/ZTFh-b2cMPRpu
I had a serious talk with the person pictured here. I thought this edit of the picture I took that day captured the way I felt after that conversation.
Day Six: https://youreawomannow.tumblr.com/post/178659170223/diary-october-1st
The first of every month has been very special to me since my long distance partner made me a calendar recreating our disposable camera photos. Each month when I get to flip to the next photo it makes me really happy.
Images
definition- different forms of representation/
A visual (?) depiction/
A form of language/
Expression/Indication/Documentation
[visual – it can be sound, literature or poetry, etc. – Three Chairs]
~Artistic Images~
What is this an image of?
-If i had to guess logically I might say this was created in a soundstage with a variety of lights and water with distortion during the editing process
-If i had to interpret it in some other way like if I had to use it in a context for something I think I would use it to represent time travel. http://manopb.tumblr.com/
What is an image of today?
-before God was at the center of our images
-now it is us
-technology centric/digital
– has become, more than anything, an exploration
-We exist in two worlds, in reality and online
Images and the Real
-Hope
– they always respond to a particular world view
-the perception of what is real
Photography
-caused the world view to change
-before, there was a gap between what was being depicted and what was real
Art/Technology/Freedom
-tumblr
-A dream or poem through an image
-Fascination with the unknown/mystery
-Fore-fronting the medium/technology itself by making the pixelation very much present
-Manipulated
I wanted to capture the bitter sweetness of this piece. Reading the comments I saw many had the feeling of “nostalgia for something they didn’t even really know” as well as “happiness and saddness all at once”. I wanted to capture that in this work.
When I posted my “Image of an Image II” assignment in the group page, one member of the class commented on it, hitting every point I had intended to make. This was so validating. They knew it was about both happiness and sadness but also incorporated nostalgia. I look forward to working with newhive more in my future assignments as it seems to be an effective medium for what I wish to convey.
Futurists
– response to the condition of their time

Technology gives us freedom
Poetry connected to image
Advancement of technology = advancement of art
Artists reflect the time in which they exist, for better or worse
Russian artists repressed or even killed
-The Man and the Camera
–Man and technology
–the world as they knew it then
–would the history of cinema be different if other filmmakers saw this work?
— improvisation/experimental music added on
-fundamentally the same as Futurists
-through the connection of their relationship with technology
Homework –
-what is the relationship between technology and art?
-what is the relationship between art and freedom?
-what is the relationship between technology and freedom?
Brainstorm
-combining old paintings and new texts
-comparing unfiltered and then filtered photos
-photoshop vs not photoshopped (celebs?)
-Art = Knowledge
-Philosophy does NOT = Understanding
-No art without technology
-Art makes freedom possible, but also conditions it
-Always using technology to negotiate whats possible
Process:
1. Think
2. Distill
3. Make Art
this process is messy! It’s not focused on productivity or “successful” art
creativity can happen in a conversation and that why the class is structured the way it is.
They’re challenges, they don’t have to be successful or “art”.
Designed to give us freedom
Fluxus – Flow
-John Cage
-There is an artist behind every artwork
-sound vs music
-music is sound organized
-soundscapes?
– he’s interested in listening to the sounds of life – wiping out the mediation of an artist
-fascination with silence
*** “While hearing someone talk, listen to the pauses instead of the words. Do the same thing for your own speech” -Nonfunctional Thoughts by Cesare Pietroiusti ***
-sound sculpture
-Duchamp
-Fluxus – ordinary life, living life as if it were a work of art
-4:33
-he is creating an open space and saying this is the art
-therefore every cough, every movement is the art
-not an artist because he’s giving us something, but rather because he invites us to participate and collaborate in this art space
-telling us art can be anything if we decide to enjoy it in that way
-follows the idea that everyone is an artist
Some of the things we’ve talked about so far in class reminded me of this short animation film Begone Dull Care by McLaren. This film was animated abstractly by painting directly on film, a technique never before used. https://www.nfb.ca/film/begone_dull_care/
homework #2 – do artists foresee the future or create the future?
– if artists foresee the future, that means the future already exists
– if they create it, are they magicians
-what is an artist?
-we are living the future fluxus artists imagined
I find ASMR to be a really weird but interesting phenominon/community on the internet. That’s what inspired my second Art/Tech/Freedom piece from the Fluxus manifesto. I tried to make this apply to the modern world in which we live in.

Day Two:

Again, I used a photo I took on that day and then edited it to capture my feelings at that time.
Day Three
https://youreawomannow.tumblr.com/post/178617486478/diary-september-28
For this day, I took two pictures that day that I wanted to combine in order to capture the full experience
Day Four:
https://youreawomannow.tumblr.com/post/178617685543/diary-september-29
At this point, my “to do” list was really piling up. I was feeling stressed and behind on my work.
Day Five:

I found this dead moth in my apartment, which I had been cooped up in all day. I found it quite fitting for my mood.

We watched “Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance” in my film studies class. Documentaries are extremely powerful mediums. I came out of the class enlightened, emotional, and empowered.
