  1. The photo that I decided to use is selfie that captures my family. Since it is self took image, the image won’t show the full body figure but shows faces of me and my family members. I am on the very left smiling directly at the camera. My brother and mom are right in the middle, having their head touching each other, which shows affection of my mom and brother. On the very right side of the photo, my sister stares at camera as if this is ridiculous. Since young, our family members didn’t really like taking photos (such as family photo), so it is rather rare to find the photos with all members visible in the same captures.

When I took this selfie, at that time I found it rather frustrating that the time that I spent with my family will just remains as a memory of us but evidence (?) to be left and to be remembered in the future. So I took out my phone and took a snap of my family members waiting in the line for restaurant. It was quite awkward to take photos of my own family but I guess I will proud of this photo in near future.

    The Image of Image:

Within my first challenge, I described my family photo as image that is personal favourite. When I think of family, the words that came into my mind was essential and comfortable.

To me, bed can represent that. Bed is essential because we need to sleep in order to function. Comfortable because it is where you can rest and be who you are no matter what. For the background, I used an image where it is purple/ dusk sky and I flipped it 180 degree. Because I saw it somewhere where if you flip the sky photo 180 degree than it is like looking at Earth from sky. So I decided to make that so it is sky yet is like space where ambiguity exist and you can be yourself. (Also purple is my favourite colour).I put Peter Pan silhouette to depict how family to me will remain forever young (like memory will never fade) and we will be guided through hardships and happiness through sky. The bed is blurry to depict how dream is always blurry and like non existing.

  3. Week 3: What is an image?

    Questions:
    – What is an image?
    – What is its relation with reality?
    – What kind of reality is an image?

    Adjectives that are mentioned :
    > Repetition, childlike, playful, nostalgic, stressful, orderly, mute, sleepy, dream-like, calming, depressing, intriguing, fresh, confusing, empowering

    >> Practicing to come to the image without having knowledge to it to receive a FEELING and try to figure out.

” What are the image make me feel?”

    What does a painting depict?
    – Medieval paintings represent the “order” of the world
    – Renaissance : golden ratios, one point perspective
    – ” depicts and communicate a particular relation/ understanding of reality”
    – Hierarchy of certain person and relation to the world (Renaissance)
    – How humans occupied the world, godly place in Renaissance

    The first photography:
    – Took over the role of representing the visible reality
    – The world became more tangible and able to feel like it can be touched (closer to the world)

Technical images = Reality = What is real?
    > Became more of something that is touchable than before

    > World is more available or accessible: photography allowed people around the world to get to know other countries without actually being physically there.

    > Marey: uses the photography to visualize the study of movement/ motion within the body of humans such as grasping hands or holding onto something

How this changed how reality was intake? ; forensic

    “Documentary” Photography:
    > used to have documentary drawing/ painting to record the world –> but now possible to do that through photography

    * Huge impact on how we understand the world *

    * Photography helped the world to see the actual world to their own eyes and determine what is truth (partially, not always) since it is quite accurate to portray the scenes that are happening around the world rather than painting and photography.
    > It can’t be 100% real because the photographs only captures certain part of the world and happening and it doesn’t contain EVERY situation or scenes. (cropped or intake parts)
    > But at least it would not change or alter like painting/ drawing (styles of painter or drawers and/ or personal feelings or experience may affect the document (unconsciously)

    – Photography captures the life moment : it feels so real that you actually feel like you are part of the photograph.

    – Conveys factual image but helps individuals to feel what it may feel without interruption of artists’ feeling/ ideas.

    – Somewhat conveys the feeling better than painting does because it pulls out the ORIGINAL feeling/ idea toward it without prejudice.

What is Today the relation images // real ?
    > It may be surreal or real depending on
how we feel about it but Today is like one of images that
exist for us to remember or reminisce.

What kind of reality is an image?
    > Any kind of reality can be an image. Image
could tell us what may be “real” but the only truth or what
it is like really can be told only when you were in that
scene to experience or even if it is an image, it is never
    the same with all people.

How has this interrelation changed today with the
    emergence of new images?
    > Fact at the same time as feeling .
It is factual at the same time not always factual yet
contains so much feelings for us to feel.

  4. Week 4: The Power of Images

    Comment on the apple assignment
    > A lot of experiences involved that reminds of memories than expected

    Questions:
    – What is the power of images today?
    > Power of images today is something to communicate in our daily life basis. Some images might be more eye catching than others, but some images might not be so exposed but subtle to give pleasant feelings. I feel like power of images today is more of way to express different feelings and life to share with different people and the world.

    – Have images lost their power?
    > I believe images are not as powerful as it is like before. It is because we are completely exposed to all different kinds of images. However, there are certain types of images that still have power to impact our daily lives or feelings. We may share the photos to evoke sympathy at the same time, we can also evoke anger and so many other feelings in order to represent certain ideas.

    – What is their potential to change the world?
    > They have unlimited potential to change the world. It is just the way how you depict the image to be conveyed. Now since the images are just available everywhere, so we have to consider how we take photos or display can hugely impact on it. Along with photos, we have to consider what text will there be to make it more emphasized or symphatized etc.

    the CENTURY of the SELF:
    – Torches of freedom:
    > If the cigarette is symbol of men and penis then if the women start smoking them, then they will now be empowered like a man because they got “penis” through smoking cigarette.
    > Became equal with what they not own.
    > This was possible due to single movement that was being captured by the journalist at the event. At the given time, all people will take cigarette out to smoke and this captured the image to show the world.
    WOMAN = MAN = CIGARETTE

    >> This shows how image can be powerful.
    – It was socially acceptable through single symbolic act (both visual and image)

Image has a huge power/ impact to actually change the human’s mind through a simple act or single mage. And it could imprint within people’s mind very deeply.

    UNCONSCIOUS —————— IMAGE

One of the images shown in class : Death of a loyalist militiaman. Captured the moment when the soldier was being shot and was about to fall down to the ground.
    >> This gave people huge impact on the war that was on going in early September, 1936. Because this photo depicts the actual moment where the soldier dies. Until recently, people weren’t really exposed to actual death that was happening in War because there weren’t that “clear” depiction of actual death moment that will let people know what it is like. So this image gave huge impact to society which urged the ward to end.

    Questions:
    1. Can images contribute to social change?
    > I believe images can contribute to social change significantly because with certain images and few words, it may produce huge impact to the world either good way or bad way. Some images can be taken without evil or bad intention but how it is displayed or put on to the world can create whole new different meaning to it. For example, there is image of turtle tangled in plastic or having straws stuck in the nose. People looked at the image then realized how the waste is causing huge impact to the nature.

    2. Can images motivate ethical action?
    > I believe images can motivate ethical action just like example above. Nowadays, people are exposed to different images at the same time so they will try to do things that matches their own beliefs. Some people may not think of good things but if the people take in a image and see that it is needed to be helped, I believe they will act on it.

    3. Can images embody human freedom?
    > Yes and No. Images can embody human freedom by having people to express their own feelings and thoughts through images. However at the same time, the society is still quite limited (I think) to completely embody the human freedom. But it is nonetheless able to express our own idea either abstract or direct way.

  6. WEEK 5: Art, Tech, Freedom
    Images –> Languages –> Art + Tech

    ART // TECHNOLOGY // FREEDOM

    Futurism
    – Dates: 1909 ~ 1944
    – Italian avant-garde movement that took speed, technology and modernity as its inspiration
    – Portrayed the dynamic character of 20th century life, glorified war and the machine age, and the favoured the growth of Fascism
    – An artistic and social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century
    – Emphasized speed, technology, youth, violence, and objects such as car, the airplane and the industrial city.
    – Self- invented art movement by Filippo Marinetti

    * Changing life profoundly = human beings trying things that was considered as “impossible” at that time. Risking their lives to get what was considered impossible to do.
    * New world can be opened through machines

    * Machines or industrials can give them new hope where in hope their life to get better than now.
    ” We can do anything”
People having disillusion that people think they could do anything.

    * Marinetti = free the land from old perspectives, free the countries from the past artworks, ideas, knowledge and activities that we have BUT to start from the scratch to achieve sth completely new.
    ——
Personally thought this was something impossible to do. Because we are living on the land that everything was built on and have stayed for years which may or may not have continued. Also, people can NOT be free or new from the certain knowledge that they are given with. It is somewhat embedded either consciously and unconsciously and the way you think currently. Act all based on the past knowledge that you earned through life (Experiences, mistakes learning etc)

    * Combination of technology and the current world. Seems to show more of abstract artwork or surrealism
    * Futurism was possible to be thought because of the technology that is brought up by World war. Within the war time, most technology is being innovated

    * side effect from post war –> technology
    * DADA = kill each other from war, from the border people are being killed
    — there is sth dark inside human being

In discussion we saw how, in times of drastic changes, artists felt compelled to create new ways of expressions, new artistic languages. Why? Why was this important?

    – I believe it is because they see potential or possibilities through that drastic changes. People can see something that was impossible to be done in the past, but at the same time they want to express the distress in drastic changes.

Not all people can’t adapt very fast, some are fast and some or slow, sometimes they might even reject to take in the new changes. For example, Futurism shows how people show planes, car, motion is being possible and try to express this (through war) but at the same time DADA saw this as something bad and had people killed from here to show negative effect.

This was important because artists have movement being made to reflect the current state of the world that they are exposed to let people around them to know something new is happening/ occurred or something has changed.

  7. Week 6: Art, Tech, Freedom cont.

    Images? –> art/ tech/ freedom –> Technology

    Is ART an image?

    – Looked at the error page to tumblr and seeing what kind of feeling can be depicted
    >> Motion, light, dizziness, annoying, repetition, cosmic, depth, colors, time travel, etc.

    >>>>>>>> ABSTRACTION<<<<<<< IMAGES REAL * –> TECH

    * REAL : always changes and it may be subjective
Can’t tell which goes first just like chicken and egg

    # What is an IMAGE today? #
    – In the past, all the paintings depict more of religious aspect and try to paint as realistic as they can be > as if they are leaving mark/ evidence behind to show their own daily life and historical moment
    – Also, painters try to used “existing view” but to add one’s thought and emotions through changes of brushstrokes and different hues to convey more feelings.
    – Currently, the “REAL WORLD” or more of “EXISTING WORLD” can’t be seen. All the imagery images or not even can’t see what images are used to depict the possible feelings that we are feeling.

    REASON EXPLORATION

Human & Robot: can we tell difference between them now?
    – no more “natural” feelings and thoughts to be given or thought of
    – MECHANICALLY thought, not very creative anymore in unique way. // similar to one another and can’t be differentiated much
    – Hiding oneself behind fake self online to depict oneself

No true thoughts are spoken, no true emotions can be shown, no creative ideas can be represented in this world.

MANIPULATION, PIXELATION, TECH, PERCEPTION, SENSES, SPACES, RECREATION, APPROPRIATION etc.

    RE- CONFIGURATION
Tumblr = not that “I” created but take someone else’s work by re- blogging and it become part of “my” blog.

    TECH HOPE, RECONFIGURATION, CONFLICT

    Have conversation through images

Image is like ABYSS where there is nothing and empty at the same time infinite. It is the gap that is in between what I see and what I say.

Image is the way to present the real world or real but at the same time it is not touchable. If it is touchable than it means that it conveys the feeling to the audience or HUMAN.
” Touch the body of an idea.. Eyes close, the words open”

    collage of the media
    values and virtues

    HW: Image of the Image
    – create an collage with the classic Clair de Lune
    Clair de Lune, classic

(Idea = it will be very abstract and weird to combine this calm music with crazy video to show very subtle and unreal feeling at the same time real)

  8. Weekly Challenge #5. The Image of the Image 2.

After listening to Clair de Lune, I got this instant idea where the music itself is very calm and nice to listen when we want peace. However, we never listen to this music (unless you are fan of classic) when we are taking break, but we listen to this while we study to concentrate on. So I wanted to bring out the juxtaposition in it when I was creating this two gifs.

    1) What we expect:
    https://media.giphy.com/media/8OPBkGPNwJJJzBm9Bt/giphy.gif

    2) In reality:
    https://media.giphy.com/media/2uIlr5ZnoTats868bc/giphy.gif

  9. 1. What is the relation between ART and TECHNOLOGY?
    – Technology helps ART to be spread to the world. Ex) Facebook, Instagram etc.
    – At the same time Art shapes Technology by helping to design the technology (such as designing phone, tablet, computer etc.)

    2. What is the relation between Art and Freedom?
    – Art helps people to feel or have freedom in expressing ideas/ issues
    – But at the same time, art can be limiting the freedom that is available

    3. What is the relation between Technology and Freedom?
    – This is little complicated. Tech allow freedom to occur but at the same time gives too much freedom for people to share inappropriate ideas.

  10. Based on the idea above, I got this artwork created. (collage)

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WI8vu5kJuHgxOX_X_EiSSsaPXBDUC-Ze/view?usp=sharing

I decided to show how the revolution has occurred in art world which may considered great or unusual at that time but in reality it is still limiting like the painting inside the frame holding on to traditional method to create an artwork. For technology, I tried to combine how we are looking at artwork that is created through the screen.

While I was watching the video about artist Nam June Paik, I wanted to make a video about the gaze. We are always so exposed to gaze that we receive either consciously and unconsciously that you start to get weird feel that you are being stared at even though you are for sure alone in the room or house. So I decided to create a video where everyone does, looking at the phone on the bed about to go to the bed and feel like we are stared. But when we look around theres just no one. But you feel like you are getting the stare because you are exposed to them. In the end, we will be just like nah thats just weird feeling and let it go.
