The Image of the Image

Create an image that visually evokes the experiences you described in our first assignment (An Image in my Mind)

In that assignment, your depiction of mental and physical/sensory associations constitute a written image; a translation from visuals to words. This project invites you to translate these associations once again into visuals.

This process can be seen as:

VISUAL IMAGE  —-  WRITTEN IMAGE (your description in the assignment) —-  NEW IMAGE

As per our class discussion, consider colors, shapes, textures, etc as conveyors of meaning. Your image doesn’t have to be fully abstract: you can incorporate figurative elements but not from you initial image.

One approach can be to start by creating a set of keywords from the feelings in your written description. Then consider the formal elements that, in your view, allow you to visually communicate/share them:

What would be the colors and shapes of nostalgia?

Of happiness? Longing? Tenderness? Uncertainty?

    1. Hi Daniel,
I just wanted to say that I really like your choice of cool colours (the green, blue, and brown hues) and scenery used in your piece. The image reminds me of a very calming and tranquil place, one that also appears hard to reach though because of its perfect qualities! The form of the building is also reflective of traditional architecture, so I can clearly understand the connection between this piece and your written description!

    2. Hi Daniel,
I really like your choice of contrasting colors. Green and blue usually offer a feeling of tranquility. However, here in your work, they are much brighter and thus the architecture in the center is able to stand out.

    1. I love this! I think you captured what you were describing in your image perfectly; the stress, taking on too much, not being able to manage everything. As soon as I saw the gif you made I was able to relate to what you were writing about because I felt immediate stress. Through the repetition of words, the glitching and the flashing lights I felt as if I was in my own world of anxiety and there was no where to turn.

    2. Hi Nikki! I really really love this work, it really gives me a feeling of cyberpunk and futurism. The flash, texts and colors work very well together. It made me think about how texts could be a form of movement along with lights/colors that have rhythm.

  1. The photograph I wrote about last week was linked to the memory of my Grandpa and the happiness I received when I thought about all the time we spent together when I was a child; a period in my life when I thought that time would last forever.

The image I created this week shows the English Countryside full of blue skies and plush white clouds, a place of clarity and serenity, which equates to the pleasure and joy of my Grandpa’s company. At the same time the image is covered in drawings, representing the simplicity of a child’s mind, but the reality that follows behind it. Hence a child thinking time will last forever, but in actual fact time just keeps on rushing by.

The simple things make me think of you, so is it really goodbye? Or is it hello?

    1. Hi Betty,
I just wanted to say I really like the aesthetic qualities of your image! The piece reminds me of a page from a scrapbook. It is very harmonious and pleasing to the eye because of the pastel colours, lighter tones, and well-aligned rectangular shapes. Your image makes Vancouver look stunning!

  2. Based on the week1 project what I have written, this project I wanna focus on the idea of nostalgia.
The picture was shoot on George Wainborn Park at downtown Vancouver.
The use of photoshop is the idea that layer two images into one
The whole concept of this image is accompany.
The visual conductivity of my image is formed from left to the right by the river, the building and the children’s walking direction.

    1. Hey! I really like how you have placed the figures throughout your image. And I also like how you’ve photo-shopped it- there seems to be a feeling of movement within the image.

    2. Hi Kristie. From your image, I receive a message of accompany. The distance from beach to the sea is obviously short, but I feel that it would take long time to walk from one side to the other. Also, the teenage and child on two sides make a contract, symbolizing a growth.

        1. Hey,
I LOVE IT! It’s so simple yet thought-provoking.
I really like how you censored the Barbie doll, while nudity can be freeing and a body is just a body, society tend to see it differently and sexualize that. In that case, a body will no longer be just a body, and nudity will feel restricting rather than freeing.

For last assignment I choose a family portrait as my image as an international student. So this image I made is to express the feeling of lonely, depression and looking forward to stay with family. The background of galaxy and desert delivers the message of vast and hazy. For the details in this image I think everyone would has different thoughts. Personally, my family is like a sun to lead me towards my goal and always support me when I was lonely or in depression although there would be some small contradiction between me and my parents.
Consider the colors, shapes and texture in this image. I drew some irregular shapes in different kinds of blue spreads around the circle which look like a protection, and an orange circle in the middle as a symbol of family with some scarlet triangles and purple curves puncture into the circle. Scarlet triangles symbolize the harshness happened in family and purple waves are more like improvements of relationship.

    1. Hi Jessica,
I really like the sense of loneliness you captured within this piece. Within it there’s longing and a desire to be elsewhere, and the barren desert atmosphere as well as the night sky really emphasize these emotions! The orange circle in the middle of your image also contrasts well with the rest of the piece because of your colour choice! It looks warm and welcoming, feelings that we often associate with family!

    2. I love the orange colour you chose to represent the sun in this image; it gives me a sense of warmth and safety. I can see how your family is like the sun to you since it is bright and full of life and is able to lead you out of darkness.

    3. Hey Jessica,

I like the way that each elements in your image actually represent different things relatively to describe your family relationship, also you capture the characteristic of colors and use it at your image to make it more deep

My image last week was a picture of my mother and I right after I had won a competition. I decided to make my image this week abstract. I was focusing on the different emotions associated with my original image (happiness, pride, peace). I tried to represent those emotions through different colors and I also wanted these colors to be interacting with each other. My memory of my original image is quite vague; there are some moments I remember clearly while others are not as clear. I tried to recreate that feeling through this image.

    1. Hi, Yutong. Your sketching is lovely but combine your cat with a background of dark or warm color may be better to express your emotion to your pet. And the details could be more exquisite.

As I mentioned in the last Weekly Challenge, I believe that before we achieving success, there will be some struggles we have to face with. I am trying to express the memorable and exciting success by the starry night and present the difficulties and problems we need to solve by the dark night. Also, I was trying to imitate the heartbeat motion of human and showing the feeling of life with Gif.
