The Image of the Image II

Assignment:

Create a visual image from the song Claire de Lune

Comments:

For this assignment we will return to our familiar approach of translating an existing image. In this case we will depart from a sound one.

This project invites you to discern of rather feel  the experiences conveyed in the song and translate them into what we are terming a ‘contemporary’ image- a collage of many elements using current technologies.

What are the feelings and experiences from Claire de Lune?

Is it about love, beauty, sadness, pain, loneliness, happiness?

What are the colors, shapes, forms in it?

You may want to consider creating your work in Newhive. My main conceptual idea for this was really inspired by the stylized vaporwave videos that are quite popular on Youtube — To me, the whole experience of this song elicited feelings that were very similar to the ones vaporwave videos (and their corresponding audio) also produced.

    (>人<) Hope you enjoy –

    1. This was so creative and intriguing to watch! I loved how you meshed the static noise and Clair De Lune together. I felt like I was in a whole other fantasy world.

    2. Hi Nikki,
I like that you combine different elements together. And I love Rick and Morty! I remember this episode telling the story between Unity and Rick, and the last scene of Rick alone in his garage always makes me sad.

    3. This is very interesting. Different parts of the video contain different mood and feelings to it. It is great how you combined the modified music with different speaker to it.

    1. Hey Daniel,
I didn’t get a lot out of this song either, I had to listen to it over and over again until I started to feel something from the song.
But I actually find your image to be quite interesting, I liked how you incorporated the duration of the song into your image – it makes everything seem so mysterious!

    1. This is quite interesting. By combining different images on top of each other, it is quite interesting to see various images to it. I first saw a woman/lady in the image. But as I look into the images, I found different images.

  2. When I first listened to Clair De Lune I immediately thought of a whimsical world, a place where there is no time and simply just magic. However as I began to listen again and again I started to become sad because the music reminded me of the times I visited England as a child. My dad would always play Classic FM on the radio on our drives up to the country side. Spending time in England was a fantasy, but sadly my fantasy had a time limit on it. It is always sad to say bye to childhood.

    1. Hey Katherine,
I really liked how you captured those feelings with the website, I think most – if not all – of us can relate to the feeling of having to grow up. You really captured the darkness within what we would usually consider to be light and happy. 🙂

    1. Hi Veronica,
I just wanted to say I really liked the experiences you managed to capture within your assignment as well as its overall essence. It truly felt like I was watching a story unfold. I felt a sense of falling, loss, loneliness, and tragedy at the beginning. However, as the video progressed, I felt a sense of hope and then calmness and purity. Finally, I felt joy.
      Amazing work!

    2. Hello Veronica, this video is so relaxing and I really enjoy it. All the scenes seem to match the music very well and the pace also tells a lot to the audience.

    3. Hi Veronica,
fantastic piece. I just want to say I really like the transformation of each clip to express changing feelings… especially the montage way you deal with the concept of mv of Triple H!! Enjoy!

  3. So for my image I had already made a video last week which I decided to integrate. When I first heard this piece it reminded me of the past. It made me think of all the movies I have seen that are set in the past showing different lifestyles and dressings. I also felt like there was a feminine quality to the music. There was also something nostalgic and sad about it but at the same time there was a feeling of being free.

    1. I really like your take on the song! I really felt like the girl in the video was just waiting for something to happen, to speak to someone, but there was so much free space around her that her thoughts just got lost and she couldn’t be heard.

    1. Hello Marcus! I really really love your work, there is so much playfulness in this work. I feel like the work will change depends on the ways we present it. It is very different to look at it from the pc screen and from the class screens. And I love the colour that you chose, this colour has a certain balanced texture in it and it makes the work mysterious along with the music. Furthermore, the squares and the circles kept me thinking a lot and imagining a lot. Thank you for making this !

    1. Hi Emily,
I just wanted to say I really liked the juxtaposition in your piece of the music and the videos of people holding digital phones as well as the technology use within the animated scenes. Certain parts of the video felt gloomy, almost like people were trying to escape from what we often consider “reality.”

    2. Hey Emily,
I really liked the videos you chose to use, they really capture a sense of loneliness along with this song.
It’s lonely, a little depressing, and kinda sad – but that’s how I felt from listening to this song, and you really captured it.

    3. Hi Emily,

It is interesting to see how you juxtaposes one to another. As you first start the song I feel like things are concentrated on technologies and loneliness. But as your video goes you go back to nature and you can feel the beauty and happiness (that’s what I felt).

    1. Hi Violet! I really like your post. The roses and the stars as well as the overall use of color makes gives me l a general sense of happiness. But the image of the crying girl and the invisible faces adds a kind of sadness to the image. The clip showing the mountains and clouds moving made me think of the passage of time or a memory. And finally, the beautiful quote gave me a nostalgic feeling towards the image. It’s so intriguing.

    2. Hi Violet,
I quite enjoy your post. The crying woman in Lichtenstein style and the couple sharing with the movement of the same landscape give me much impression.

    1. I have overlapped the two images together cause different emotions often appear at the same time, we do not just experience one thing at a time. :))

      1. Hi Xuan,
I think your idea of overlapping two drawings is quite interesting.. It seems like the 2 paintings finally turns out to be mix together in a magic way.

    2. I love how you overlapped the two images. I found that it really captured the essence of the assignment because we do feel a collage of emotions and sometimes it is hard to pin point just one feeling we have because we feel so much.

    3. Hi Xuan,
I love the final effect it turns out to be! If I look at the two drawings separately it still looks beautiful but the calculated overlapping technique really adds extra feelings to the image.

    1. Hey, I really like your video! I’m actually a big fan of suzy! the feeling she expressed in the video perfectly matches the song. I can see her sadness through her action, i can also see there might a story in it.

    2. First, I feel peaceful and elegant from this music, but I want to express this music from a different persepctive. It is about mess and sadness. I also mix some joyful emotions in the video.

    3. Hi Krystal,
I quite like your post, especially the blur processing of the figure finding something in a feverish way. It sends me the message of her struggling feelings mixed with effort to get out of sadness

  4. I couldn’t find a way to create a actual full video (on Youtube) with gif files so I decided to make two separate ones to see. Clair de Lune (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVJsEKbz3S0).

When you first hear the music, you have this feeling of calm and peace in it, which is what is below.

    https://media.giphy.com/media/8OPBkGPNwJJJzBm9Bt/giphy.gif

But what I actually thought of is,
    https://media.giphy.com/media/2uIlr5ZnoTats868bc/giphy.gif

Because we mostly listen to music like Clair de Lune to concentrate on study. This means that the music itself may be calm but for us we are going crazy to study for it. I wanted to bring out that irony within the song itself.

when I listen to this music, my first interpretation was an open empty Catholic Church. In the middle of the church there was a field of unknown white flowers. Moreover, the sun light came right across the glass and reflected on the flowers. I feel a sense of calmness, and relief.
The wall of the church is little bit old, but it doesn’t affect my appreciation of its beauty
