What is an apple?

Create a visual representation of an apple by manipulating any digital image of an apple found online.

Your manipulation should strive to create an image that depicts the apple as a combination of experiences.

This project is a continuation of the approach to images that we have explored in class.

1. Before starting your manipulation you might want to ponder on the sensory experiences that you want to convey (a good idea is to make a list, as we did in class). Please consider some of these:

  • How does an apple feels like? Its flavors, textures, weight, smell, textures?
  • What kind of memories, feelings or experiences do you associate with it, memories of childhood, a trip, a friend or relative, a lost love?
  • How would you represent the process of eating it?

2. The goal of your manipulation is to create the visual elements that could convey these sensations and thoughts

This task can be also understood as the transformation of a “information” image into an “artistic” one.

      I really like your image! The pixelation around the apple reminds me of a video game, however, the texture used for the inside of it really contrasts with the playfulness of the outside. The inside texture appears really harsh and powerful –

    2. Hello Daniel, I really like this “bad winter apples” and I am curious about the name of it! How seasons are related to this work? The image makes me think about video games and the 8-bit RPG games.

      I really like that this showed a linear, gradual transition of our understanding of “apples”, how technology is changing our understanding of the world around us. To me, it also makes me think of how corporations are changing the way we think and live.

    2. I really like this image! It really captures how our definition of the term apple has changed over time. I also like how as your eye travels from left to right the design, size, color and effects on each apple changes.

      It is really interesting to see how the various forms of apples from original fruit apple to electronic brand apple. It is fascinating how it is aligned to match the picnic blanket(?) as if it was like having picnic. So like picnics between different kinds of apples just like people where they have all different ideas toward apple and meet to discuss.

      And it is interesting for the date because the date was noted as 2007 July 29th because first iphone release date was 2007 June 29th!

I found myself getting lost in it, trying to figure out why the apples are confined within the lines and what the progression of the six apples stands for. It gives me the impression that you used to adore apples, but as the years went by this love for them slowly diminished into nothing; they didn’t mean anything to you anymore.

      I love the appearance of your image, the background, the mouth and the apple goes really well with each other. For some reason I feel very related when I see the geometric shape of the apple, also all elements are connected creatively.

Adding on to what was said in class, this image is interesting to me because while we can tell this is trying to represent the memories that you have associated with an apple, I also get a feeling of it being very generic. I think this is because many of the images you chose come off like stock photos. It’s a clash between what’s personal and what’s impersonal.

      This reminds me so much of pop art of same objects being depicted using different colours. It is pixelized to give those graphic image strong at the same time each coloured apples contain different image to it so it’s quite interesting to try guessing what it may represent for each color of apple.

      This reminds so much of my childhood and those wording,
      ” apple helps with beauty”, so was given to eat all the time. It seems like mouth is like vacuum absorbing all the apples to become beautiful or to maintain beauty.

      I feel like I can hear the child complaining “whaaaaaa”. I feel like those mouths reminds the kid to eat lots of apple which kid is just nooo. But mouth trying to persuade how good apple can be and apple skins good for you.

      This reminds me of one food diet using apple. People try to lose weight with apple because it is said to be “good” to your body. (but not if you only take in that). It is quite subtle background to use compare to apple twisted to the extreme in the middle. But that makes the image more intriguing because background seems to give silent pressure on it.

  18. I feel distraught when looking at the image because there is a lot going on; there are bright colours, the child’s face is becoming deformed and the mouths on either side are large and ghostly. It is like I am going down the rabbit hole and these overpowering voices are taunting me. I like how you were able to link all of these elements in order to depict what I assume to be a unfortunate memory of apples.
