FINAL PROJECT

note: This is a general guideline. Beyond these suggestions, I encourage you to find the best way for you to share what you learned, enjoyed, and are leaving our class with.

Introduction

In this course we have analyzed the relations between images, art, technology and society and the ways in which they pose radical questions to our understanding of the world, reality and our human condition at the turn of the 21st century.

Every week you have been asked to created a visual response to each of these topics. This final project is meant to offer a general view or final response to the topics of the class.

Goals

The goal of this project is to invite a overarching reflection on the topics and questions addressed in this course. It will represent a summary of your own views, the ideas that captured your imagination, or simply put, some of the thoughts that emerged from our encounters throughout the term

Assignment

Create a visual work that conveys your ideas and responses to the questions examined in our course.

This work is mainly a compilation of your weekly projects but will also incorporate other elements that will allow you to further elaborate on your ideas: class notes, comments, or views that have emerged from our discussions.

Questions

The key questions you should address are:

  • What is an image?
  • What is a digital image?
  • What is art?
  • The role of art in society
  • The role of imagination. What are the implications/responsibility for artists?
  • Technology and humanity: What is technology? What is humanity/ What makes us human? How are Technology and humanity connected?

You are not expected to provide a definitive answer to any of these. As we have seen, there are many dissenting and seemingly valid views. The intention is to comment on the many references from class and elaborate your own vision:

How will our relation to technology further develop?

Format

There is no preferred format: you can create a set of Newhive expressions, a video work, a power point presentation, or a pdf file.

Presentations and due dates

Presentations will take place in the last two weeks of classes. After your presentation you can improve your work to include the suggestions and ideas resulting from the discussion. The due date is the Wednesday after the last class

  1. Hi everyone!

THIS IS NOT MY FNIAL PROJECT, I mean it is, but it is not done. I didn’t put the audio in yet, and the audio give all the narrative.
Please, understand that this is still a work in progress, and that I ll post the final version of it this week.

    thanks a lot !

My final project is a compilation inclusive of many things but focused on the culminating topic of the course: humanity & technology and their uncertain path forward.

I sourced from videos we have seen in class (Koyaanisqatsi, Space Odyssey 2001, Bladerunner, Never Let Me Go) as well as from personal assignments and other pieces that I feel relate. The narration is written by Nic Pizzolatto and I felt it was a very poignant to the topics being discussed towards the end of the semester, which I try to discuss in this video. Beneath those words is a recording of the startup tone to Windows 2000 but slowed down 4000%. It creates a beautiful soundscape but I think it finds its true value in the contradiction or question that it brings to this video: are we just beginning our relationship with technology or is it now just ending?

The climax or perhaps the finale of this video is quite ominous of course but it is not meant to be decisive in how I envision the future. I suppose it can act as more of a warning. I would not be surprised if their is struggle in the future of the relationship between humanity & technology but I cannot surmise much past that. With the rate at which we are pushing technology forward combined with our dependancy it, as a species, I would ultimately preach caution.

      Thanks!!!

    1. Here is my final project. There are a couple (slightly different) versions on my youtube channel.

WARNING: there is fast-paced imagery involved that my be hard on your eyes, or my lead to a seizure (main concern to be if you have been diagnosed with epilepsy or have experienced a seizure before).
In order of how we discussed the topics in class, each short excerpt of personal poetry and musings connects my answer or the lingering questions I still have for myself on the subjects. I know the visual is quite dull. My response to the project, I felt, was more literary centered than visual. Textual ques is where I find most of my inspiration in everyday life and it felt fitting to reflect on the course in this manner.
Had a great time with you guys over the semester! Hope you have a great summer!

  2. **left as a reply above on my previous draft and just wanted to make sure it wasn’t missed!
