{"id":723,"date":"2017-02-24T14:41:09","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T21:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/visa2100316\/?page_id=723"},"modified":"2017-02-24T15:06:24","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24T22:06:24","slug":"week-6-summary-and-next","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/visa2100316\/class-notes\/week-6-summary-and-next\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 6- Summary and Next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This last class was devoted to revisit the main questions examined in the first half of the term:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What is an image?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Images understood as a way to apprehend and share our experiences and views of the world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8216;Information&#8217; vs. &#8216;artistic&#8217; (allusive\/abstract) images.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Social roles\/ impact of images<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Formal elements of contemporary technical images<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Art &#8212; Freedom<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our main goal was to examine the nature, use and misuse of images throughout history with a focus on <i>contemporary, technologically-based<\/i> ones. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the following weeks we will explore the new potentials of such contemporary images for expression\/communication i.e. as a <i>newly emerging visual languag<\/i>e. As we move on the last theme of the course (Technology and Humanity), we will attempt to communicate our ideas and points of view through images. Every assignment will ask you to elaborate on the class topic through a visual work\/expression.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Next meeting we will devote part of the time to look together at the works created thus far. In preparation, I am asking everyone to<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/visa2100316\/weekly-assignments\/week-6-comment-on-your-peers-work\/\"> comment on at least two works of your peers<\/a>. This is an attempt to remedy one big lack so far: a not-very fluid communication in our group. <i><b>This will be an ongoing requirement from now on and will have an impact in your final mark.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Another effort in this direction will be to hold the class in my studio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maps.ubc.ca\/PROD\/index_detail.php?show=y,n,n,n,n,y&amp;bldg2Search=n&amp;locat1=324\">(B.C. Binning rm 207<\/a>). The space is more informal and not everyone might get a sit by a table yet, we will rid of the computers in the lab which so far have become a barrier in that communication.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Once again, I remind you that my office hours are Tuesdays, 9:30-12:00.
