My name is Connie. I am a second year BFA student. I am very interested in photography and other digital media.
Through this course I would like to develop my understanding of the collaboration between technology and art. I hope to broaden my horizons through investigations into many different fields and resources, as is greatly encouraged by this course. Self-examining is also very necessary. Along with both outwards and inwards investigations, I also expect myself to become more familiar with professional art-making processes and own the good habits of a thinking artist.
Being an artist has always been what I am striving for. My aspiration is to become an artist who is responsible, reflective, and inspirational. I don’t want to be cynical and criticize by revealing the ugly (I am not commenting on any artist who may be thought to practice in this way; they are heroes of the society and they deserve great respects, and I do think revealing the ugly/darkness is very necessary for the better-being of the whole humanity. But just in my own practices I hope to contribute to the society in a milder but no less powerful way). I hope to touch the soul of people with my art, and influence them with love. I believe that love is the most powerful and effective way to awake humanity.
In the lecture we talked about how important a role technology plays in modern society and is influencing the art and humanity. Technology creates a virtual world which parallels to the real one that we live in. The boundary between the two worlds is fairly blurred, and at most of the time the two worlds are overlapped and blended together. People are so immersed in the virtual world that they can’t really tell the virtual from the real, as if the virtual created by technology indeed exist in the real life.
The penetration of technology into our life and the rise of the virtual world also raises the question of identity. Many people behave differently and shoe different, or even contrasting personalities in the virtual world. Technology brings people “dual-identity” – one in the real world and one in the virtual world, both of the same person. The virtual technology enables people to accomplish things which they may not be able to do in real life, and it frees people from hiding behind their personas that is required by morals in the real world. But we cannot say this is an ill split in the psyche – they are just different aspects of us mirrored in different situations. Just like the reflections of us can be different in different mirrors but they are all reflections of US, each as an entity; we cannot say which identity is fake and which is real – dual-identity truly exists, but they, at the same time, might be illusions – just like the reflection of you in the mirror is after all, not YOU. Or perhaps the world is actually made up of illusions, and we live in this imaginary world. The intangibleness of the world has been more and more dominating as the technology advances forward.
My name is Connie. I’m from China and I came to study in Canada five years ago. Now I am a second year BFA student. I am very interested in photography and painting and I am working hard in developing my skills and understandings of art.
