Week 1- Introductions

While our class will explore analog photography, our first project will focus on digital images.

The intention is twofold: This exercise will help us introduce ourselves to the rest of the classs. This experience will also allow a reflection on the nature of images today and to introduce the discussion on analog photography.

Assignment:

Create a sequence of 10 images (still, motion or a combination) that constitute a self portrait through a visual exploration of your room/living space. You can use your digital camera or phone.

When posting your work, include any comments that you feel will inform our perception of your work

Technical tips

You can submit your work as a set of stills or as a video.  Any format is valid: a power point presentation, a sequence of stills, a pdf or a video file (here you will find a whole set of video tutorials covering various tool to create a slideshow from your sequence).

Post a link to your work in the comments sections below (your actual work should reside in an external site; Flickr, Tumblr, Youtube are recommended)

Make sure your work is publicly available. No passwords please!

Goals

This project will help us reflect on:

  • The possibilities offered by new technologies in the creation of images
  • Our approach to creating images
  • The use of art (and particularly photography) to explore our surroundings through an invitation to ‘see’ a familiar space from a different perspective

This is my workspace (not my bedroom but the “dining” space between the kitchen and the living room due to its convenience) that is inevitably shared between my mom, sister, and I (although 90% of the objects shown in the images are mine). All art-related things belong to me, including the portraits hanging on the wall that I did many years ago.

    • To look at your series of pictures, I found the way you took your pictures is really interesting. There are many small things you took in details and I found it is a good way to depict how you like to put in your living space.

    • Judging from your photo set, you appear to be an adventurous type of person. You are not afraid to explore, because you take pictures literally from ground level of things under your drawer. The photo with the books has an interesting background colour (presumably your wall?) which looks like a sky or the sea, along with the backpack, camera, and logbook further enhances that sense of adventure. You have a variety of books focusing on a variety of topics, which makes me think that you have a very strong sense of self-awareness. The way you look at the artificial light on the ceiling, as well as the natural light coming from your window in different perspectives leads me to believe that you are open-minded to your surroundings and understanding of different opinions.

  2. Here are some things i find interesting in my room
I major computer science and i prefer to stay at my table as long as possible.
therefore, with a dual screen setup, i can code and watch/listen to videos while i work, and with the water fountain at the side, i minimize the trips i need to go get water.
I am also a saxophone player since grade 3. I dont play as much anymore but i often still pick it up and play couple songs i like.
The whiskey on the shelf helps coding and music playing in various ways. They also help you sleep.
last but not least, the hole on the wall was me trying to tell my brother, who lives next door, to quiet down…unfortunately as you can see, i knocked a bit too hard :/.

    • Your photos give me a very claustrophobic feeling (in a strange and almost comfortable sense) so I created this short piece in response to the sensation. The entire project is interesting to me because most people approached it by taking static photos of inanimate objects in a room while still capturing or trying to emulate their lives. The stills in your photos all contain a lot of information. Many of them contain multiple objects which all tell a little bit about your life. I wanted to reply by making something that went in a pretty different direction and tried to give some information about me without referencing a lot of objects. The static, still-life shots that are in your photo set still point to activity and life which is what I was thinking a lot about while making this project. • Dear jasmine, this is my response to your photos,

I really like that your pictures are consistent and you carry a theme in all your pictures. All the pictures seem to be taken in a wide angle, from the places in our homes that we visit daily basis. I hope the wide angle pictures that I have submitted from my house be consistent with the theme that you have chosen in your artwork, and please notice that in some of my pictures I have portrayed simplicity like you have done with the bathroom sink.

    • Through your photos of your bedroom and the neutral palette dominating the room, I feel as though you’re a very calm and collected individual. The objectivity of your photos and angles give the viewer a sense of your objective outlook. The toy figures scattered on your table add color and reveal a hint of playfulness or child-like nature that adds complexity to your more outwardly dominating composure.

    • Dear Ziying,
This is my response to your pictures,
      http://visa240w1b.tumblr.com/
From the pictures that you have submitted, I figures that the main colour theme of your bedroom and living area is white, which I believe reflects the very nature of you, which I believe is filled with calmness. At the other hand the minion action figures reflects the happiness that you also carry within yourself. The camera angles are also straight forward, which reduces the sense of exaggeration in your work. Your closet and drawer doors expresses a sense of harmony in your bedroom, and the number of dressers in your pictures shows how disciplined you are in keeping your room tidy.

    • Looking at your photos, I feel that you are organised, but also very peaceful, and calm, also perhaps quiet. You enjoy sewing and being creative. The inclusion of your roommates and pictures of family (I’m assuming), I feel speak to the idea of balance between having time alone and being with others as the other photos are all from your perspective or seem to be in a space where you are alone.
