Week 12- A visual story

As our last class project we will explore the challenges and potentials involved in creating a visual narrative. ‘Narrative’ here means readings (however ambiguous or direct).

We have seen a few examples of artists who combine various images to create one single work. The relations between these images can be linear (in the case of a sequence) or multidirectional (panels, collages, etc) but in all cases such relations start to hint to ideas and invite interpretations or narratives.

As a premise, all works will be a response to The Garden of Forking Paths, a short story by Jorge Luis Borges. This will allow us to compare different approaches and provide a common ground for discussion. The story (or the story within it, i.e. that of the Labyrinth) also provides a great starting point for reflection on time and temporality, which is, of course, a central element in the photographic process.

There are many comments on the story online. You can read the whole story here.
