  1. Hi, my name is (Bella) Ying Zhai, and this is my last term in UBC. During the past three years, I did lots of painting and drawing, from still life to abstract, and most of them relates to my personal memories and political and social issue in China. Because this is my last term, I want to make something different, such as sculpture and installation, more about three dimensional.
I like conceptual art, but sometimes it is still hard for me to understand, but I will do more practice.

  2. visual essay:

When I asked myself “what is human?”, I was staring at the ceiling, and repeated this question again and again. And finally, I answered, human is imagination.

I recorded this video one year ago when I came back to China for Chinese New Year. When I saw this video, I did not realize this was recored by myself and in my grandparents’ home. I was scared when I watched it, and I even wondered how could I recorded such a terrible video.I showed it to my husband, checked the address and time on my phone, and finally I remember where and what it is.

Through this experience, I think human equals to imagination. I would not say human creates this world, but I want to say, because of human, because of our imagination, our world becomes better and better. And without our imagination, I think there is no technology.

  3. I’ve wachted a TV drama called The Gifted during my reading break. its about “two ordinary parents take their family on the run from the government when they discover that their children have mutant abilities, and join an underground community of mutants who have to fight to survive”(Wikipedia). Some one said this drama discussed the discrimination and tolerance. However, what I think is, how government tries to use mutant special abilities as their weapons. X-gene changes also could effect by technology, and I think biology is also part of technology. if this happens in our real life, we can not imagine what’s the world going to be.

Here is the link for the drama:

  4. When I did research about how technology changed our lives, I found this person Therodore John Kaczynski (Ted Kaczynski), his also known as the “Unabomber”, he went to Harvard at the age of 16, and the score of his IQ is 167. However, he realized that “human’s dependence on the machine has deprived human’s autonomy and freedom.” Gradually he became a anti-tech, and started to make bomb and sent to different universities and even put it on airplane. Finally he wrote a letter to The New York Times and The Washington Post, letting them posed his article “Industrial Society and Its Future”, otherwise there will be more people dead.

    This is his article:

  5. On the video “Will the Future Be Human”, professor Yuval Noah Harari asked:
    “what’s the future looks like?”,
he said, “this will be decided by people who own the data, those who control the data, not only control the humanity, but the future of life itself.”
    he also mentioned:
“Machinery replaces the land, and now data replaces the machinery”
“Why data is import. because we can hack into human beings and other organizations.”
“We have to think about the date, what is happening inside my body and inside my brain, and what you want”

For my opinion, if human not using technology in a good way, things happened in the TV drama The Gifted will happen in our real life. And there will be more people like Ted Kaczynsk.
