FINAL DISCUSSION

As guides for your final work you can refer to the questions posed in The Metaphysics of Technology III.

This work is but a condensed compilation of your notes, projects, other contributions and thoughts about the topics of the class. The questions will help in organizing your work in the case of you decide to create a chart. Alternatively you can create any kind of work that addresses these questions as your contribution to our final dialogue.

  1. My final project is a newhive cultivation of content about masked DJ culture. The identity of many modern DJ’s are concealed through an electronic mask that provides shelter to their personal life. One of the questions asked was “What is the relationship between technology and capitalism” and this prevalence of technology within music artists identities answers exactly that. These people completely rely on the secrecy that the technology in their “Faces” provides for them, leading to a lifestyle fuelled by fans fascination of their music integrated with technology.

For my final project, I arrived at one question: what is our purpose? Based off of our discussions in class and the readings provided I feel that the narrative is “technology is our purpose” but based off of the Aristotelian argument, our purpose is not technology but rather our purpose aka our “chief good” is self-sufficient end, intrinsically rewarding and lacking nothing. Therefore, technology cannot be our purpose and we must abandon the drive to fullfil the emptiness of technology and rather focus inwards.

My final project delves into the relationship of technology to the human desire to create. Inspired by the experimental film “Koyaanisqatsi”, this small film attempts to appropriate videos taken from the internet and juxtapose them with sounds modulated and created from a human voice. The title speaks to how the audio was created and it is juxtaposed with images both celebrating and showcasing humanity’s mastery of technology and its capacity of destruction with it. This film is not meant to have an overall meaning. Rather it is an exercise in juxtaposition and exploration of the very concept of technology as it applies to humanity as a whole.

  4. CHAOS/TIME/LIFE/SIMULATION…
For my piece, I’ve created an interactive 3d simulation based on a variant of Conway’s Game of Life: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lqTgenrNo78nuuaizkUdq9aE68Mzlo2S/view?usp=sharing

Contemporary art has changed the individuals perspective of God unto themselves, and Western Science is and has always been in pursuit of attaining for humans the knowledge of God – through tools (technologies), laws (our fundamental theorems), and rules (that our laws must assume) – thus each individual becoming God… so then we must ask of our rules and laws time, and in that time put to test our necessary presuppositions upon the mantle of chaos, within which relationships are sustained invisibly to our rules… and laws. Have we then as scientists stagnated in contribution and thought while in pursuit of the fundamental contemporary ego, attaining that knowledge of God – who we now believe to be man?

(Hopefully) the technohuman will be religious by virtue of scientific inquiry.
(Probably) the technohuman will abstract into simulation until someone hits ‘Z’.

  5. For my final visual essay, I wanted to focus on the disparity between the positive potential applications technology can have in society and what we actually use these forms of technology for, specifically VR. Though VR can be used in a socially and scientifically important manner, the majority of people will always use it for things that are considered unimportant, namely entertainment.
