Assessment

Moodle Assessment

I have not worked with many tools online to create assessments other than “Survey Monkey.” Hence, using the assessments tools in Moodle was interesting. I had fun exploring and learning how to use the tool. I found it frustrating at some points because I did not like the restrictive parameters. For example, ‘short answer’ means allowing a student to express their ideas by writing out a few lines or a paragraph. However, in the Moodle quiz, the allocated space for short answer was small. I also thought automated marking could be ambiguous because a student’s answer may not be worded exactly as a teacher may have put the answer into the automated key but it still could be correct. I struggle with the marking parameters in Moodle because I think students would unjustly end up loosing marks. When we compare this to a teacher marking each and every question and reading through each and every question, there is a big difference. In this case, student’s ideas and forms of expression are taken into consideration more.

I can see how online testing can be very beneficial as it is more flexible. It results in less marking time for the teacher and provides prompt feedback and marks to the student. I personally remember taking tests online in University. I remember being happy about getting my marks back right away and being able to see what I did not do well on. I was able to understand what my short comings were because the information was still fresh in my mind. However, I think this form of testing does result in less personalization.
