COURSE DESCRIPTION
Welcome!
Spanish 100 is an introductory course for students with little or no knowledge of the language.
In this course, the students will acquire the necessary grammatical foundation for communicating properly in Spanish. The students will have the opportunity to develop oral skills (listening and speaking) and literacy (reading and writing) skills.
Additionally, students will be introduced to the rich cultural mosaic formed by the Spanish speaking countries around the world.
At the end of this course students will be able to communicate in Spanish at the beginner’s level.
- Learning a new language is a fun, stimulating and rewarding experience.
- However, to succeed in a University level language class, students should be aware that this is a rigorous course with a heavy workload, aimed at attaining a working knowledge of the Spanish language and the objective is for all students to learn and to have a successful learning experience.
- For this reason, students are expected to attend class, to come to class prepared and to work hard in the assigned activities individually and/or in groups. Students are encouraged to form Study Groups when possible.
* Attendance and participation are required and academic integrity expected.
- For information on student academic integrity expectations, please visit: https://www2.viu.ca/facultyhelp/codeofconduct.asp
Coming to class prepared is expected and necessary. Preparing the oral In Class work before class is essential in order to be able to participate in the oral In Class exercises.
The written homework (SAM Workbook) is the practice tool. It needs to be handed in punctually, in clear writing and stapled.
- When a Chapter is completed in the Textbook it needs to be simultaneously completed in the SAM Workbook, since the SAM resources are practice tools.
A new language is learned more effectively by using it. Students are encouraged to practice in Spanish the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – as well as to make positive contributions to the class, actively participating in exercises and activities.
- *As per Department policy, due to the interactive and communicative nature of a Language learning process, this class can’t be taped, audio recorded or captioned.
* Dailyoral exercises and mini oral presentations done in class are essential and an important percentage of the final grade. Please refer to the Evaluation section for more information.
- Spanish 101 is a continuation of this course and offered in the spring term. For more information, please contact Dr. Ana María Donat: donat@viu.ca
- Acquiring a Certificate in Spanish (Romance Languages, Spanish specialty) is an excellent asset to have in the current globalized job market. Spanish is the second language most spoken in the western world.

The Spanish Club is sponsored by the Club’s founder and Faculty Liaison Dr. Ana Maria Donat Dr. Donat provides guidance, mentoring and support to the Spanish Club Executive.
