UBC and the changes

What have I learned from this year?

  • Language:
    Studying at UBC in the Bachelor of Education has helped me with the language around education. While I was previously cognizant of the conversations around teaching and education I also needed the right terms to understand and express myself. Part of being a professional is knowing how to communicate in the most direct and appropriate manner.
  • Diversity;
    Studying at UBC allowed to me to have meaningful experiences and to reflect on them but it also allowed me to share the experiences of the other teacher candidate. Since every student is unique and every situation is different sharing those experience was very valuable. Although I did not experience those situation myself I have a greater understanding of what is normal or what can come up. I also have the shared experiences of my fellow classmates in their successes and failures.
  • Profession:
    My UBC experience also helped me shape a more concrete definition around the teaching profession and what it mean to be a role model. While I plan to continue inquiring on that topic and believe that this definition is dependent on culture and therefore not static, I now feel ready to become an active member of the profession and work for a brighter and safer future.
  • Interdisciplinary:
    Working this year with so many different people in so many different subject areas, I have started inquiring in interdisciplinary teaching and education. I have found that it can re-enforce inclusion in the classroom, connect well with active play, can help student with their Social Emotional Learning, and help them become intrinsic learners. Linking my specialization in Technology and Engineering, my experience on my CFE in Bamfield Marine Center and all the different classmates I have worked with this year, I am looking forward to building Interdisciplinary programs
