Digital Story

For my final Digital Story assessment, I wish to use my photopeach/Pixton/snagit remix for my ETEC 565A “Digital” Story project.

Reflection:

Throughout this week I have been trying different web 2.0 storytelling tools, and using them in different ways, in order to create an effective story for ESL students. Originally, I created a story using Pixton, that told my story as 21st Century Teacher. While interesting, the feedback I recieved was that it confused people and they did not udnertsand the context or pegagogical nature of the story. I also added a photopeach story that my son and I wrote for his kindergarten class. This one definitely had a bigger impact on the viewers, and the story reached a wider audience primarily because of the music and personal nature.

My feedback helped me reflect upon what story I “needed” to tell and “how” to tell it in order to create an online lesson for my ESL Learners.

After reading my feedback from my peers and after watching other peer stories, I noticed the impact of music on a story. My comic took a long time to make, but it did not not grab people’s attention. My photopeach story about a Christmas tree grabbed attention, but missed the pegagocial connection.

I decided to see if I could figure out how to implement a comic and music in a slideshow presentation.  I needed to demonstrate to my learners that everything happens in “stages”. – Coming to Canada, Learning a Language or learning to use a new web 2.0 tool. As a result, my lesson will be developed upon stages…..the Pixton comic, the remix of the Photpeach/Pixton comic and finally the creation of a simple ePortfolio – Glogster poster. The students would  start with one activity, experiment and create a copy, then take the next step. It doesn’t matter if you are an ESL teacher or student, you have to take things one step at a time.

I would start with the Pixton comic, which shows an example of a story and what is expected of my ESL students.

I would then show them the photopeach remix and discuss the impact of music. I would also discuss the fact that you have some “editing” challenges in photopeach, as I never know how each picture will come “into” the frame. So the comic bubbles are sometimes hard to read.

Since I had to use snagit as well to complete this kind of project, I may “change” the lesson based on the student’s ability. I could always ask them to bring in photos of themselves after arriving in Canada and create a photopeach story that way as well.

Finally I would demonstrate the final product, a Glog. This Glog would act as the ePorfolio for the entire course. Students would be able to add all thier favourite assignments to demonstrate their abilities.

By following “steps” my teaching objectives would be to offer ESL students the ESL scaffolding that they need as language learners. I would demonstrate basic editing techniques by showing “stages” of development, and I would demonstrate a formative assessment process. I would also meet the PLO’s outlined in the BC Curriculum for Planning 10 and ESL 10.
