Sports Festival Tomorrow!

tbirdJust a reminder about the Sports Festival, tomorrow Friday, July 22nd!  
We will be picking you up outside of the GAGE RESIDENCE  at our spot (flags) at 12:30 pm and walking to the event location! Please be on time if you would like to attend 🙂
– wear appropriate sports clothing,
– bring a water bottle,
– wear sunscreen and/or hat
– leave unnecessary items locked in their residence.
– the event itself runs from 1:00 – 4:00 pm

UBC’s new mobile app will help turn new students into seasoned campus professionals. You can even log in with your student ID on the app to make it more personalized.

If you ever need to get somewhere, this app will get you there. It is available as a website, and both an iPhone and Android app.

And if you want to join, but don’t have friends who are interested, don’t worry! You can join any of the leagues and make friends there! You will find that people in Vancouver are very friendly. Yelp is a website (and mobile app) which publishes crowd-sourced reviews about local businesses. It is one of the best ways to find great local businesses according to the people that visit them.

If you are lost in the city, or just want to get somewhere quickly, then Zoro is to the rescue! Zoro is the first app in Vancouver to let customers book a taxi cab directly from their mobile devices. Zoro puts customers in contact with thousands of cabs across over 10 companies. Users will be able to arrange a ride immediately or pre-book a future trip based on their pick-up location. The app will estimate the fare needed, map your taxi’s location while you wait, communicate with your driver and maintain a record of your recent trips. 24/7 Eateries

Is it 2AM and you’re suddenly struck with hunger? Or are you looking for a place to study with a steady flow of coffee? Check out these places close to UBC that are open 24/7 (i.e. whenever you want).

2724 W 4th Ave, Kitsilano Vancouver

This local favourite is an all-vegetarian restaurant with miso soups, burgers, teas and much more. Peak hours are usually quite busy, but if you go late at night, you’re almost certain to find a cosy place to eat. To get here, you can take the 44, 84 or 4 buses and stop at Macdonald, or take the 99 and get off at Macdonald and walk north a few block until you are at 4th Ave.

3035 W Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6K 2G9

Calhouns is a great place to study at all hours. This large bakery has coffees, teas, and homestyle food such as pizzas, lasagna and sandwiches. There’s WiFi if you buy something and is limited to a few hours, but if you buy a coffee every little bit, you get a new WiFi code. To get here, take the 99 bus, get off at Macdonald, and walk a few minutes east.

1883 Cornwall Ave, Vancouver, BC

Siegel’s bagels has two locations, one in Kits and the other on Granville Island. The Kits location is open 24/7. This unique eatery serves Montreal-style wood-burned bagels all day. They have free wifi. To get to the Kits location, take the 4, 44 or 84 and get off at Burrard. Walk a few blocks North. To get to the Granville Island location, take the 4 or 84 to Fir and walk into Granville Island.

Breka Bakery

Breka Bakery is a local favourite. It’s three locations are all open 24/7, and have assorted baked goods and coffees. There are wifi and tables for the late-night studier. Two locations are downtown, and a third in South Vancouver.

Downtown locations:

818 Bute Street Vancouver, British Columbia

Take the 44 from UBC to Burrard and Robson and walk about 7 minutes to get to the Bute location.

855 Davie Street Vancouver, British Columbia

Take the 44 to Davie and Burrard and walk 1 minute to get to the Davie location.

6533 Fraser Street Vancouver, British Columbia

Take the 49 bus to 49th Ave and Chester street. Walk about 1 minute to get to Breka.

Here are a few resources and links we thought you might find useful as you settle into life at UBC and Vancouver.

UBC Maps 

This webpage allows you to see all of UBC’s buildings on one map. You can print off maps, download an app, or simply search for the building you are looking for. There are also links to maps of certain aspects of UBC, such as food places or recreation facilities. If you need a UBC Map really quick here’s a pdf.

Food and Eateries on Campus

UBC Food Services has this great website set up with information about its many eating locations. There are some menus, location information and maps. A neat page on the website is “Feed Me Now” which tells you which eateries are open when you click it.

Wesbrook Village is on the south-side of campus and has many places to find food and groceries. Check out their webpage for details.

If you’re venturing east, and towards Vancouver, you’ll hit another little village with places you can get sandwiches, some groceries, sushi, and more! Ask anyone for the village at Allison Road.

Study spaces

With your courses at UBC taking off, you’ll probably be looking for places to study on campus. UBC Libraries and UBC’s informal spaces are great places to get your work done.

Exercise and Fitness

UBC Rec (which can be accessed with your Rec pass) offers many fitness options over the summer. Check out their website for more information. There are lots of places to exercise outdoors in the many natural places on campus, such as the Wreck beach stairs and the tennis courts at Totem Park Residence.
