Composting in Gage

Composting is provided at the base of each tower and in the basement of the Gage Apartments.

Top 3 Composting Myths Busted:

  1. Yes, you can compost meat, bones, dairy and cooked food here at UBC. Our In-Vessel composter can break down a lot more than a traditional backyard composter that you may have at home.
  2. Chopsticks and cutlery are NOT compostable, but some takeout containers are – check!
  3. If you take out your compost bin and clean it frequently, you won’t have to worry about smells or fruit flies forming.

For answers to all your waste-sorting and recycling or composting questions, check out the UBC Recyclopedia: http://bit.ly/oIDu4L

Where and when should I take it out?

Work out a schedule with your roommates for emptying and cleaning your compost bin. It is a good idea to take it out twice as often as you take out the trash, or when it is full: whichever comes first.

When it’s your turn to take out the compost, empty your bin into the big green containers labelled “organics” in *insert residence-specific area here from list below*:

Is the bin mine to keep?

No! The compost bin is part of your room inventory. If it is damaged or missing at the end of the year, you and your roommates will be assessed for the cost of the bin. Please keep it clean for future residents to use.

Good Things to Know for Living in Gage

Noise Noise travels very easily throughout the residence, whether you are in your room, or walking through the courtyards.  We ask that you respect your fellow residents’ right to live and study in a quiet, comfortable environment at all times.

Quiet Hours in Gage:

Sunday -Thursday from 10pm- 7am.
Friday – Saturday from 1am-7am

Garbage & Recycling & Compost This is located in the base of each tower and the Apartments basement. You can get there by   taking the elevator and pressing “B”. You’ll see signs directing you from there.

Want to have a Party?Parties are permitted in residence on Friday and Saturday nights (or dinner parties Sunday -Thursday).  A maximum of 25 people are allowed in the unit per party and three parties can be registered an evening.  To register a party, see the Senior Advisor in your tower 72 hours prior to your party.

Your Senior Advisors are:

Jeremy E01D1, Jonathan S01D1, Roshni N01D1

* Unregistered parties are a violation of the standards contract, and will be documented.

Fire Safety Be careful not to handle, touch or hand anything off of the sprinkler heads in your unit/rooms, as they are highly sensitive and will be set off.  Tampering with any fire equipment such as fire extinguishers, hoses, and alarms is against the residence standards and is cause for eviction from residence.

Open Alcohol Policy In residence, alcohol is allowed inside the units only.  Alcohol in the courtyard, common areas, or outside on residence property is strictly prohibited. Standards action will be taken against those found with open alcohol outside of their room/unit.

Smoking – Smoking is not permitted in residence buildings; this includes the usage of hookahs, shishas or any other smoking devices. Smoking may only occur outside of buildings, and must take place a minimum of six (6) meters away from all buildings, windows and doorways.
