The Bible Use

The “Bible” part of this text is due in part to the maps themselves, but also to the “Explanations” towards the end of the book. With the help of these explanations, the “Children and Youths” that the Bible Atlas is clearly marketed towards would be able to better connect the physical geography provided in the map with the scriptural segments that the explanations refer to. Each explanation includes a brief description for each section of scripture the map, but does not really explore the biblical story attached to the map; instead, the explanations  serve as a bridge for the child to make the connection between the story they either already know, or are just now discovering, and the spaces that provide the physical framework for that story.

An adult version of a Bible Atlas, published in 1900, can be seen at archive.org. The biggest difference between this example of an adult bible atlas and the bible atlas for children and youths is the length of the text: the adult version is much longer and more comprehensive. The child version is really just a few simple phrases that describe exactly what you’re looking at, and the technical details of the map.
