I am a computer science student with a year to go. After graduating with a sociology degree and new perspectives on the world, I worked for a period in tourism, leading coordination duties for a handful of BC-Alberta Wilderness hostels.
Of course, there is nothing like working in the tourism industry to make a person antsy. My experiences working, followed by a short period of travel, gave way to a realized love for variety and problem solving, leading eventually to a second stint in school.
Computer science brings novel perspectives to work, though I feel that in a lot of ways, programming and writing are similar. By sharpening knowledge and techniques in both, a person builds skills to unlock creativity and problem solving. In both programming and writing, technical foundations underscore abilities and practicing these pillars creates frameworks for creativity and expression.
Spanning my venerations for computer science and sociology, I am interested in the bridge between humans and technology with an eye towards the human insights technology provides. Just as writing elucidates human ideas and perspectives, innovative and popular technologies similarly reflect humanity, from our habits, desires, and assumptions to our tendencies and thought processes. My interests in sociology and technology relate to more general leanings towards data and critical thinking. I am also partial to web and mobile app development and I’ve enjoyed making a game or two.
