Subject: Advice for Emailing Professors

Dear Evan Crisp,

Many thanks for reaching out to the ENGL 301 class for advice on writing emails to professors. Some of the notes below are informed by the “reader centered,” writing style which is used in professional settings.

Suggestions

  • Creating a clear and relevant subject line will help the professor understand the purpose of the email.
  • Using a school or work email address will indicate the message is from an identifiable source. The professor may feel more comfortable responding to the email.
  • Addressing recipients by their name and formal titles such as Dr or Professor will create a professional tone.
  • Introducing yourself will indicate who is writing the email and why.
  • Highlighting an acute interest in the course’s content and themes. Showcasing ways the course can benefit your educational and career goals.
  • Maintaining a professional and neutral tone throughout the email.
  • Being concise and clear.
  • Expressing appreciation towards the professor for their time and consideration. Force enrolling students into a course is an act of kindness.

Conclusion

Practicing professional writing will help when communicating with future employers and colleagues. If you have any questions regarding the suggestions, feel free to reach me at sidney@ssidney.com. Best wishes.
