Recently, Canada’s prairie province of Saskatchewan has captured worldwide attention because of its new carbon-capture facilities.
The technology lies in capturing carbon dioxide from coal-fired power stations and it is the first time for it to be applied at a commercial scale.
Obviously, environmentally-friendly facilities are of great benefit. Reduction of carbon dioxide will improve air quality, creating a good environment and living conditions for humans. In this way, they are so welcome in the globe that people all advocate widespread use of them. However, the cost behind it is so high that it cannot be ignored. According to the data, the facility needs C$1.4 billion to operate without getting much actual financial return. The cost is now burdened by taxpayers, the federal government and the provincial authorities. Although the backers of the project is looking for more investors, it can be predicted that the project will be at risk in the future because investment is much more than return.
Since capital becomes a barrier, people should think of other ways to coordinate. For instance, can carbon-capture facilities be developed which cost less? Can high-tech equipment be invented which produces less emission of carbon dioxide? Besides, we can advocate more people to participate, devoting their own strength to handle the problem. I believe the facilities will not cause much diseconomy in the near future.
