Husbandry

Rodeo cattle are supplied by “livestock contractors” and are bred specifically for competition. Bulls are selected for their genetic predisposition to buck, and steers are selected for their ability to run. These animals are considered athletes, and are carefully cared for so they can perform at their best. Before each event, participants are examined by a professional to ensure they are in good health. If not, they are removed from the competition. During transport to the rodeos, cattle are penned with others they are known to get along with to reduce stress, and may be in the trailer for a maximum of 24 hours before being let out. Regulations around rodeo livestock are in place to help protect their welfare.
