Contact the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Ottawa

Please consider contacting the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Ottawa, Canada to convince police and prosecutors to take action in pursuit of justice. Your telephone calls, hard-copy letters, faxes, and emails (in that order of priority) will hold considerable weight with the Bangladeshi government, showing that Rumana’s case and well-being is being followed closely internationally. Include Name (Rumana Monzur), Date of Incident (Jun 5, 2011), Request of the Embassy (ensure access to justice, provide support and safety etc.).

Sticker distributed at the rally - permission obtained from Amnesty International, Ottawa.

The community of St. John’s College (where Rumana used to live when in Canada) and the Bangladeshi Student Association held a peaceful rally in support of Rumana, and all other women who have been, and are being subjected to domestic violence. All we demand is justice for Rumana and an end to violence against women.

The event took place on Sunday 26th of June at 3pm at the Vancouver Art Gallery – Georgia Plaza, in front of the Gallery’s stairs . We thank everyone for their presence and support.

Please continue to spread the word and heighten awareness by taking the steps indicated at the top of this page. You can also send this Flyer to your departments’ lists and anywhere else you have connections to. You can also get some prints some and put them on boards where you work, the gym you go to, etc.

This post currently reads “Accordingly, any donations should be made no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30.” June 30 is a Thursday – please clarify whether donations required by Monday 27th?

Alice, Thanks very much for your message. Donations should be made no later than 4pm on Thursday, June 30th. Thanks very much for catching that typo. It’s now been fixed!

Will UBC accept online donations for this cause?
If not I would suggest postponing the cut off date of June 30th

      Hi Viviane,
Thanks for your comment. For now only cheques and cash are accepted. The reason apparently is that it takes time to set up the online donation and we want to get this first support as fast as possible to the family. My understanding is that later on, online donations will be available.

  5. This is a tragic story and my heart goes out to Rumana and her daugher. Can you please have someone from the fund raising committee contact me directly. I have some ideas on how we can help financially and get the message out globally.
Here is a youtube video that I made for Rumana:
