ETEC 532: Technology in the Arts and Humanities Classroom (elective course)
Description
This course helps students understand the role of the arts in technology by:
- historically reviewing the development of various technologies and their impact on development in the Arts, and
- examining socio-cultural considerations and their impact on the uses of technologies, aesthetics, pedagogy and curriculum in New Media contexts.
Objectives
In this course, you will have opportunities to:
- Identify and investigate through digital learning environments how conceptions and contexts of the arts and humanities are being maintained and transformed in contemporary societies. Explore the connections between pedagogy, curriculum and technology in multiple settings.
- Examine and reflect on particular educational aspects of technology in your own personal and social contexts in light of course readings and discussions.
- Identify teaching and learning strategies for using technology in K-12 schools and adult education.
- Examine how the semiotic and social meanings of the arts and humanities have been and continue to be re-interpreted.

Assignments
1. Participation (20 marks)
10 Marks designated by the instructor and 10 Marks self-assessment.
2. Course Readings, Discussion, and Writing
Course Reading. You are expected to read the weekly assigned readings in the course packet (available from the UBC bookstore), resources on the website, and participate in class discussions in the communication spaces.
3. Analysis of (3) Vignettes (30 marks)
This task has two parts: one completed in week 4 and the other in weeks 7-8. You will analyze the first vignette in week 4. Working on it individually, you will respond to the questions listed in week 4 under Statements and questions – Vignette #1 Analysis. As you respond to the question, you will prepare a 500-700 words analysis of this vignette.
For the analysis of vignette #2 and #3 (in weeks 8 and 9) you will work in groups of 4 and each of you will choose two vignettes and analyze each one of them.
4. Case Study Analysis (50 marks)
This case study analysis is the major project, the culminating assignment for the course. For this assignment, you will critically examine the use of technology in your own setting. It is divided into the following five areas:
- Statement of the topic
- Research Outline
- Articles Annotation and Critique / Literature Review
- Case Study Paper
- Collaborative Peer Review.
Optional. You may propose a final project that will better suit your goals for the course. In order to complete this option you will have to discuss your proposal with the instructor early in the course.
