Welcome to my English 301 Technical Writing blog. English 301 is a writing course offered in an online format, which studies the principles of written and online communications in both business and professional contexts.

English 301 is divided into four units. Unit one is dedicated to the principles, practices and people of English 301. Unit two marks the beginning of the formal report project, in which each student will design and and submit a report proposal to our writing teams. Unit three is dedicated to drafting a formal outline, which involves receiving feedback from your writing team and the instructor. Unit four focuses on the finalization of the formal report, and developing a social networking strategy.

I’ve always wanted to ensure that I will be able to communicate adequately on a professional level for the benefit of my professional future. Upon completion of this course, I expect to obtain the necessary skills to competently communicate on a professional level on a variety of platforms. I also expect to have a sufficient grasp on the distinctive elements of writing in a professional context. Furthermore, I expect to understand the importance of a well-designed resume, and the advantages that can stem from social networking.

As someone who does not regularly engage in business-oriented social networking sites, I expect to understand the importance of sites such as Linkedin, and what it can do for future career opportunities.

Although I have taken many “writing-intensive” courses at UBC, I have never taken a course which revolves around learning a business and professional writing style. I am very excited to expand my writing knowledge, and to develop skills which will benefit me in my professional career.
