The standards by which a teacher is expected to act are very important for the profession. They set the guiding path by which teachers are expected to act professionally to maintain respect of the profession and to maintain the trust of the TRB. These are established in order to maintain the highest sense of quality of the profession and to reiterate that teachers need to continue to strive to meet the ideals of the trade without languishing into a state of mediocrity or a lack of development. It’s also necessary in order for the TRB to be able to issue Teaching Certificate.
The standards stipulate that the teacher act in the interest of the learners, act with integrity, integrate parents into the school community, and implement effective teaching strategies.
Although it is important that I maintain the standards discussed it may be a challenge for me to integrate Canadian and Aboriginal education (standard 6) given the contrasts between European and Aboriginal knowledge. Nevertheless, that is an important aspect of education within the context of the educational system of BC where Canadians and First Nations abound.
