{"id":577,"date":"2016-02-25T11:10:32","date_gmt":"2016-02-25T19:10:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/wilu2016\/?page_id=577"},"modified":"2016-08-03T15:28:20","modified_gmt":"2016-08-03T22:28:20","slug":"wilu-history-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/wilu2016\/about-wilu\/wilu-history-2\/","title":{"rendered":"WILU History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Workshop for Instruction in Library Use, commonly known as WILU, is an annual Canadian conference where delegates meet to discuss timely topics related to information literacy.<\/p>\n<p>In May 1972, five Canadian participants at a conference on library instruction in Ypsilanti, Michigan met and discussed ways to share their experiences with other Canadian librarians.<\/p>\n<p>Within a few months, the following members formed a steering committee:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boris Chumakov (York University)<\/li>\n<li>Richard Dewey (Sir George Williams University, now Concordia University)<\/li>\n<li>Lucie Greene (University of Western Ontario)<\/li>\n<li>Patricia Grieg (University of Western Ontario)<\/li>\n<li>Sheila Laidlaw (University of Toronto)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on enthusiastic comments received from participants at a workshop that occurred in August 1972, a basic set of guidelines was established:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The conference initially targeted staff and librarians from universities and colleges in Ontario and Quebec (today WILU attracts librarians from across Canada and the US, and beyond)<\/li>\n<li>A committee was to formed with representation from several different institutions (today, oversight passes from one hosting institution to the next)<\/li>\n<li>The workshop would (and still does) exist independently from library organizations, in order to facilitate \u201cgrass roots\u201d participation at the lowest possible cost<\/li>\n<li>The workshop would emphasize experiences and learning (today, WILU blends practical experience and learning with meaningful theory and research)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOutside\u201d speakers were meant to be kept at a minimum and input sought from faculty members and students for whom library instruction was designed<\/li>\n<li>The registration fees were (and still are) set as low as possible, with campus accommodation when possible (major contributions from hosting institutions as well as corporate sponsors have traditionally helped to keep registration fees low)<\/li>\n<li>The conference would operate on a cost-recovery basis, with seed money passed from one host to the next (these standards continue today)<br \/>\nWILU continues to evolve and redefine itself as Canada\u2019s premier information literacy conference and now attracts attendees and speakers from Canada and the world over.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Past Hosts<\/h2>\n<table summary=\"Past hosts of WILU\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">2017<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>University of Alberta<\/strong><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">2016<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>University of British Columbia<\/strong> &#8211; <a title=\"WILU 2016\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/wilu2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intersections<\/a><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>Emily Drabinski: Intersections with Power: Critical Teaching the Library Catalogue<br \/>\nE.
