Following\u00a0pressure to investigate<\/a> the\u00a0lengths taken, if any, by UBC’s Chair of the Board of Governors and administrators from the Sauder School of Business to put a muzzle on\u00a0Jennifer Berdahl’s academic freedom<\/a>, the\u00a0Faculty Association of UBC\u00a0and the University agreed to investigate the following<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Whether Mr. John S. Montalbano, Chair of the Board of Governors, and\/or individuals in the Sauder School of Business identified by the Faculty Association, conducted themselves in the events following Professor Berdahl\u2019s publication of her blog on August 8, 2015 in a manner that violated any provision of the Collective Agreement, the UBC Statement on Respectful Environment, or any applicable University policies, including whether Professor Berdahl\u2019s academic freedom is or was interfered with in any way.<\/p>\n

Following\u00a0President Gupta\u2019s sudden resignation on 7 August, Berdahl\u00a0queried whether he lost a masulinity contest<\/a>. Montalbano gave her a call about this<\/a> but denies that he worked to suppress academic freedom<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0FAUBC agreed that the investigation report will\u00a0be circulated on a “need to know” basis<\/a>. As Sandra Mathison has said, substantive administrative information at UBC is circulated on a need to know (and you don’t need to know) basis. So we’ll see whether faculty members and students need to know…<\/p>\n

E. Wayne Ross wrote, on this case of the President’s\u00a0resignation, that UBC has taken a page from the Rumsfeld files on epistemology– known knowns, unknown knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns<\/a>.<\/p>\n
