With the Chair of BoG and Sauder School of Business administrators under investigation, UBC advises that now\u00a0is the time to speculate about President Gupta and all University affairs, if not everything. As it should be at a research institution. As it should be with the\u00a0economy in shambles.<\/p>\n

Over the past few weeks, speculation on the sudden resignation of President Gupta has been impressive.\u00a0For starters, here are some\u00a0running reasons for the resignation:<\/p>\n

  1. The University guesstimates<\/a>\u00a0that the resignation was a “leadership transition.”<\/li>\n
  2. The FAUBC reports<\/a> that the University also presumes that\u00a0the President “wishes to return to the life of a Professor of Computer Science.”<\/li>\n
  3. Martha is inclined<\/a> to accept at face value that this was Arvind’s “decision to step down” and whatever the reason we should respect whatever the University says it is or isn’t.<\/li>\n
  4. Jennifer suggests<\/a>\u00a0that in challenging Montalbano, Chair of BoG, the President lost a masculinity contest. In other words, he lost what the Romans called\u00a0a\u00a0ludi<\/em> mingo<\/em> (roughly translated as a\u00a0p-ing game or contest).<\/li>\n
  5. Wayne postulates<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0triskaidekaphobia finally took its toll on the President, the thirteenth in UBC’s history. The presidential hot-seat– think of the Spinal Tap drummer syndrome<\/a> here.<\/li>\n
  6. Eva fancies\u00a0that the President was told by the Chair of BoG that his fountain would not spew higher than the Martha Piper Fountain, prominently configured on the highest point of campus at the centre of the Martha Piper Plaza. Alas,\u00a0President Piper must be\u00a0reinstalled.\u00a0This reason adds missing clues and details\u00a0to #4.<\/li>\n
  7. The Ubyssey<\/em> posits<\/a> that the President might have found something foreboding in his “performance reports.” This may have required reading between the lines.<\/li>\n
  8. Nassif presupposes<\/a> that the President was yet another of the “victims of end runs by deans,” wherein there is a well-trodden path dating back more than a century.<\/li>\n
  9. Charlie\u00a0conjectures<\/a>\u00a0that Montalbano and the BoG evened the score by making Gupta’s tenure difficult after he canned or nudged out VP Ouillet.<\/li>\n
  10. Tony has a suspicion<\/a>\u00a0that, post Gupta’s resignation,\u00a0UBC leaders adopted\u00a0PM\u00a0Harper’s\u00a0template of denying implication in the controversy.<\/li>\n
  11. CUPE Locals believe<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0Gupta was “removed by the largely unelected Board of Governors.” Emphasis on “unelected.”<\/li>\n
  12. Simona and Frances figure<\/a> that administrators still left on campus have some answers. They gather that Gupta “didn\u2019t treat administrators with the same care” as faculty members. Needy as they are, certain admin got anxious and jealous. “Arvind was alienating people one at a time,” one administrator confided. It was time for him to go back down to research and teaching.<\/li>\n
  13. Andrew reckons<\/a> that “there\u2019s some kind of mutual agreement” at work. Nobody knows what this agreement is or if it was really mutual or just a fist-bump and not really an agreement in the official\u00a0sense if it was just a wink wink to agree to disagree.<\/li>\n

    UBC says now\u00a0is the time to\u00a0speculate. Indeed, we’re\u00a0hearing that a new motto for the next one hundred years at UBC is being bounced around in Central:\u00a0Occasio Speculatio<\/em>.
