Legal ethics at UBC? Where are you at this moment when we know full well at the University of British Columbia that (nearly all?)\u00a0secret agreements\u00a0are dangerous to shared\u00a0governance and law?<\/p>\n<p>Is it not\u00a0time to question the UBC Office of the University\u00a0Counsel&#8217;s professional ethics? University Legal Counsel is compromising\u00a0its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/universitycounsel.ubc.ca\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">values in legal practice<\/a>, is it not?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>integrity;<\/li>\n<li>independent judgment;<\/li>\n<li>respect for people;<\/li>\n<li>upholding the public trust and the rule of law;<\/li>\n<li>commitment to the mission of the University; and<\/li>\n<li>professional excellence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So much for the laudable, now laughable,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/universitycounsel.ubc.ca\/ubc-stewardship-statement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stewardship Statement<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">UBC continues to strive for transparency and accountability by implementing a strong system of internal controls, protected disclosure and investigative procedures, and identifying its stewardship mandate in various policies and procedures.<\/p>\n<p>What of the ethics\u00a0of\u00a0the Legal Counsel or lawyers\u00a0at UBC that hammered out\u00a0this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2015\/09\/alicelaberge-time-to-respond-ubc-rbc-caut-ubyssey-bced-bcpoli\/\" target=\"_blank\">non-disclosure\u00a0agreement between the University and President<\/a> Gupta?<\/p>\n<p>Confidentiality and non-disclosure are\u00a0not always sacrosanct, correct? Blanket secrecy here is unhealthy, isn&#8217;t it? Privacy is not always in the public interest or the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2015\/09\/ubc-bog-members-are-compromising-interests-and-being-dishonest-caut-ubcnews-bced-highered\/\" target=\"_blank\">best interests of the University<\/a>, agree?<\/p>\n<p>Concerned?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawsociety.bc.ca\/page.cfm?cid=158&amp;t=File-a-complaint\" target=\"_blank\">File a Complaint with the Law Society of BC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of questions&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UBC Allard School of Law?
