Listening as\u00a0Stephen Hawking reads the speeches of Martha Piper<\/a>, it is clear that the interim President of the University of British Columbia needs to begin cleaning house by canning the top of Public Relations, along with\u00a0her speech writers and handlers.<\/p>\n

When MacLean’s<\/em><\/a> calls out your Public Affairs Office<\/a> as a PR “disaster,” when when the Ottawa Citizen<\/em><\/a> says you’ve sunk deep into “damage-control” mode, when faculty and indie\u00a0media\u00a0analysts elaborate<\/a>, it’s time to actually do something.<\/p>\n

When your speech writers reduce the lot of your faculty, staff and students to “university watchers,<\/a>” it’s time to act.<\/p>\n

When the best\u00a0your hired PR specialist and handler, Susan Danard<\/a>, can do is assure the world\u00a0that there will be no “departure costs [$]”<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0faculty and students from President Gupta’s resignation , it’s time to\u00a0make a\u00a0major shuffle.<\/p>\n

Instead, with this legitimacy crisis of administration<\/a> well into its second month at UBC, it’s business as usual. Admin are now wont to party like it’s UBC @ 99. So\u00a0when\u00a0UBC announces a leadership transition<\/a>, it really means that just one staff member quietly\u00a0walked off campus\u00a0and otherwise it’s business as usual.<\/p>\n

The crisis of legitimacy is deep\u00a0at UBC from the top levels of management, including the Academic\u00a0Executives<\/a> and legal counsel, through its deans and down to its middle managers, the associate and assistant deans, who are appointed at whim<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But you’d never know it. It’s business as usual for UBC @ 100. Time to clean the house of PR and admin President Piper.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
