{"id":10513,"date":"2015-10-21T19:37:51","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T03:37:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/?p=10513"},"modified":"2015-10-21T19:51:05","modified_gmt":"2015-10-22T03:51:05","slug":"shared-governance-at-ubc-at-rock-bottom-as-senate-defeats-transparency-motion-ubc100-ubcnews-ubysseynews-highered-bced-ubcgss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2015\/10\/shared-governance-at-ubc-at-rock-bottom-as-senate-defeats-transparency-motion-ubc100-ubcnews-ubysseynews-highered-bced-ubcgss\/","title":{"rendered":"#UBC Senate defeats transparency motion #ubc100 #ubcnews #ubysseynews #highered #bced #ubcgss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, we posted &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2015\/10\/shared-governance-hits-rock-bottom-at-ubc-ubc100-ubcnews-ubysseynews-highered-bced-ubcgss\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shared governance hits rock bottom at UBC<\/a>.&#8221; Respondents noted that there was still a glimmer of hope for governance and recoiled at the suggestion that &#8220;equally futile in introducing even a modicum of accountability or\u00a0insight into the non-disclosure scandal is the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/senate.ubc.ca\" target=\"_blank\">UBC Senate<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At this evening&#8217;s Senate meeting, Senator Anstee moved a motion for transparency in the confidentiality agreement between UBC and past-President Arvind Gupta, but the motion was defeated.\u00a0Yes there was debate\u00a0but the motion for transparency was defeated.<\/p>\n<p>The initial premise holds: equally futile in shared governance&#8211; when it really counts&#8211; is the UBC\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bog.ubc.ca\/?page_id=84\" target=\"_blank\">Board of Governors<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/senate.ubc.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Senate<\/a>. Sure, faculty, staff and students can banter over the objectives of a new course or the fine print of a new policy. But on the meaningful decisions at this point at the University of British Columbia,\u00a0governance is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2015\/09\/alicelaberge-time-to-respond-ubc-rbc-caut-ubyssey-bced-bcpoli\/\" target=\"_blank\">dominated by developers and investment bankers<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2015\/10\/failures-of-legalism-and-academic-freedom-at-ubc-caut-ubysseynews-lawstudents-ubcnews-ubc100-bced\/\" target=\"_blank\">confined by legalism<\/a>. The two are hand in glove.<\/p>\n<p>Again, the\u00a0BoG&#8217;s, Senate&#8217;s and Senior Administration&#8217;s\u00a0rejection of multiple requests and appeals for accountability\u00a0in the President&#8217;s resignation marks the low point of shared or faculty governance at the University.
