(Hey, see if you can <a href=\"http:\/\/news.ubc.ca\/2016\/01\/27\/ubc-statement-re-dr-gupta-foi\/\" target=\"_blank\">get UBC to say something<\/a>\u00a0lol)<\/p>\n<p>First Law of UBC\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hr.ubc.ca\/respectful-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\">Statement on Respectful Environment<\/a><\/em>: Thou cannot complain up.<\/p>\n<p>You and our\u00a0good &#8216;ol\u00a0Board of Governors knew this better than everyone; after all, <a href=\"http:\/\/universitycounsel.ubc.ca\/policies\/index\/\" target=\"_blank\">pursuant to Policy #1, you administrated all 97 Policies<\/a>, plus the <em>Statement<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And we all know what that\u00a0<em>Statement<\/em> says about complaining up: \u201cBullying or harassment does not include the exercise of appropriate managerial or supervisory direction, including performance management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President, of all people, has the right under the <em>Statement<\/em> to be uppity, snippity, and, to be candid, John, \u201cvoid of empathy\u201d whenever he, she, or they exercise\/s managerial direction. It\u2019s b&amp;w in the <em>Statement<\/em>. It\u2019s in the book.<\/p>\n<p>Truth be told John, if the middle managers deemed Arvind \u201c<em>too quick to engage in debate in a confrontational or dismissive manner, which is demoralising to a group of executives in fear of their employment security,\u201d <\/em>you should have enforced the First Law, took those managers to task, and protected that top level.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, the purpose of the <em>Statement<\/em> is not only to pit faculty against faculty, staff against staff, and student against student. It is all that, secondarily for sure.<\/p>\n<p>The primary purpose of the\u00a0<em>Statement<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0to protect managers from any bottom up criticism. That toxic critique of Arvind should&#8217;ve been nipped in the bud.<\/p>\n<p>Top down, never bottom up.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s awesome\u00a0to know you and we all now feel we know you even better. You now know us a little better too! Sometimes a &#8220;course correction&#8221; is ok.<\/p>\n<p>Be good (and if you can&#8217;t be good at BMO, by all means, be bad).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear John,\u00a0how goes it?
