However, given the release of records and findings of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2016\/01\/ubc-shadow-systems-of-admin-and-foi-ubc100-ubcnews-bced-caut-highered\/\" target=\"_blank\">shadow systems<\/a> and backroom deals, it&#8217;s time\u00a0for\u00a0the basics: adopt the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/the-7-principles-of-public-life\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Nolan\u00a0Principles of Standards in Public Life<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In brief, for universities, the Nolan Principles are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Selflessness:\u00a0<\/strong>University\u00a0and public interest opposed to self-interest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integrity:\u00a0<\/strong>Decision-making integrity opposed to coercive power.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectivity:\u00a0<\/strong>Merit, affirmative action, and diversity complemented.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accountability:\u00a0<\/strong>Decisions and actions accountable to peers, public, and open to scrutiny.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Openness:\u00a0<\/strong>Decisions and actions open and transparent opposed to restriction and secrecy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Honesty:\u00a0<\/strong>Self-interest openly declared when in conflict with best\u00a0interests of the University\u00a0or public interest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leadership:\u00a0<\/strong>Principles supported by example of leadership (i.e., leaders model the principles).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Give us break UBC: Board of Governors, Senate, and other admin committee work is not rocket science.
