On 7 August, the University of British Columbia announced the sudden resignation of President Arvind Gupta. The next day, Professor Jennifer Berdahl queried whether he lost a masulinity contest<\/a>. The UBC Board of Governors Chair, John Montalbano, took exception to this query and expressed to Berdahl his dismay. Sauder School of Business<\/a> administrators also objected and requested she downplay the post and tread carefully so as not to insult financial donors<\/a>, such as Montalbano, when\u00a0speaking and\u00a0writing.<\/p>\n

On 17 August, Provost pro tem<\/em> Angela Redish and\u00a0Interim President Martha Piper\u00a0issued an important Statement from UBC on\u00a0Academic Freedom<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On 25 August, UBC and the Faculty Association agreed to find the facts<\/a> of the \u201calleged breaches\u201d of academic freedom. On 15 October, UBC released a 10 page summary<\/a> of the 84 page Report written by the Honourable Lynn Smith<\/a>. The Summary<\/a>\u00a0is peculiar in its exclusion of any facts of administration or management.<\/p>\n

Following a Freedom of Information request, the University disclosed the full Report<\/a>, albeit heavily redacted.<\/p>\n

In the full Report<\/a>, Smith offers a very helpful analysis of academic freedom, reaffirming \u201cthe \u2018right to criticize\u2019 either UBC or other societal or governmental Institutions\u201d (p. 21).<\/p>\n

Part and parcel\u00a0of academic freedom, criticism or critique of University management, managers, decisions, and direction was\u00a0reaffirmed in June 2015 in BC in a case involving faculty member George Rammel’s academic freedom in\u00a0criticizing the Capilano University President’s<\/a>\u00a0directions and decisions.<\/p>\n

The Berdahl and Rammell cases, combined, are extremely important for academic freedom.<\/p>\n

Academic freedom includes criticism or critique of the management of the University or Faculty, etc. without fear of reprisal or sanction<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
