Lo and behold, the University of British Columbia finally made an announcement about the budget<\/a> leading into a new fiscal year (1 April 2016).\u00a0Trouble is, the budget news is vague and the process opaque.<\/p>\n

Compared to other Canadian universities<\/a>, UBC faculty, staff, and students are in the dark on the budget, whether it be at the University or local unit levels.<\/p>\n

Today’s\u00a0news that “UBC continues to operate in a constrained funding environment<\/strong>” is clear as mud. How “constrained”?<\/p>\n

The Provost continues to\u00a0hold a freeze on faculty hiring and a balance of Faculties are\u00a0running up deficits. Come September, the University will most certainly face another $100m deficit with expenses increasing.<\/p>\n

UBC announced that “many central administrative units absorbed significant budget reductions in the last year, and most of these flow into 2016\/17” but\u00a0admin bloat continues unchecked<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For various reasons,\u00a0the Deans have been pampered by a central administration<\/a>\u00a0looking the other way when it comes to the bloat and deficits.<\/p>\n

Since the 7 August announcement of the sudden resignation of President Gupta, UBC has been silent about the\u00a0budget. Actually, save for a very partial\u00a0disclosure\u00a0of records given a volume of FoI requests<\/a>,\u00a0UBC has been silent about most issues of accountability.<\/p>\n

In the meantime. the\u00a0Council of Senates\u2019 Budget Committee has been left to tinker with Student Information Systems<\/a>\u00a0instead of holding UBC’s executives\u00a0to account.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
