Hence not all Americans are citizens of the United States \u2014 and it is a sign of imperial hubris to treat those terms as synonyms.<\/p>\n<p>Or so runs a bit of routine language-policing, as practiced by many well-intentioned people. By many well-intentioned Americans, one should say \u2013 meaning \u201ccitizens of the United States.\u201d I know because I used to be one of them. Then, a few years ago, while on vacation in Canada, my wife and I had an odd conversation with the woman who ran the place we were staying. When she used the expression \u201cyou Americans,\u201d our half-baked cosmopolitan reflexes kicked in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re an American, too,\u201d we insisted. \u201cCanada is part of America!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inside Higher Ed: Oh, Canada The United States is part of the Americas.
