The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2012\/04\/ubc-temporarily-dodges-ta-strike\/\">University narrowly averted a TA strike in mid April<\/a>\u00a0(80% of the TAs in favour) through legal means of mediation. \u00a0Mediation predictably failed \u00a0and merely deferred job action. \u00a0Seven months later the union is once again mobilizing for a strike. \u00a0The University has fallen back on a comfortable \u00a0excuse that the graduate teaching assistants are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2012\/03\/net-zero-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\">net zero workers<\/a>, and accordingly has offered 0%, 0%, 1.5%, 1.5% in increases to TA wages for the years\u00a02010-2014. \u00a0As with CUPE 116, the university&#8217;s and government\u2019s sentiment has been: \u2018Let them negotiate, let them bargain,\u2019 as long as they remain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2012\/03\/net-zero-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\">net zero workers<\/a>. \u00a0For the TA&#8217;s facing tuition hikes and carrying increasing burdens of responsibility for the University, the\u00a00%, 0%, 1.5%, 1.5% is blatantly unfair. \u00a0This is ever more the conclusion given that\u00a0the University has been merely rolling over contracts for the TA union since 2005.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/files\/2012\/10\/GMM-OCT-17.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9104\" title=\"GMM-OCT-17\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/files\/2012\/10\/GMM-OCT-17-300x240.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/files\/2012\/10\/GMM-OCT-17-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/files\/2012\/10\/GMM-OCT-17.png 913w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teaching Assistants at the University of British Columbia, represented by CUPE 2278, will take a strike vote on Wednesday, 24 October.
