{"id":9893,"date":"2014-05-09T20:51:13","date_gmt":"2014-05-10T04:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/?p=9893"},"modified":"2014-05-09T21:15:59","modified_gmt":"2014-05-10T05:15:59","slug":"vancouver-community-college-esl-teachers-expect-layoffs-bced-bcpoli-yteubc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2014\/05\/vancouver-community-college-esl-teachers-expect-layoffs-bced-bcpoli-yteubc\/","title":{"rendered":"Vancouver Community College ESL teachers expect layoffs #bced #bcpoli #yteubc"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #666666;\">Emily Jackson, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/en\/story\/1352255\/vancouver-school-board-lays-off-over-half-of-all-adult-education-employees\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Metro<\/em><\/a>, May 5, 2014&#8211; Teachers will lose their jobs due to a funding shortage for Vancouver Community College\u2019s ESL program, the faculty union announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\">Even though the program has waiting lists and full classes, VCC\u2019s faculty association fears 15 to 25 jobs will be lost by the end of March due to federal government changes to ESL training, chief steward Frank Cosco said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\">\u201cPeople are tremendously worried and concerned,\u201d Cosco said, noting there are about 120 full-time ESL teachers at VCC. \u201cA year from now, we might be talking about the end of the whole program completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of training new immigrants to speak English at colleges, the government will directly administer programs through community services.<\/p>\n<p>The province has already provided one-time funding of $4.67 million so VCC can keep running ESL classes past April 1, but the faculty association believes it should fill the funding gap to maintain the busy program. It needs about $3.3 million extra.<\/p>\n<p>VCC confirmed in an emailed statement it has offered faculty buyouts in light of the changes, but doesn\u2019t know what the full impact will be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have begun consulting with our unions to explore options that will minimize the impact to our faculty, staff, and students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VCC also hopes the province will fork over more cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that the Ministry continues to pursue other sources of one-time funding to support the transition of ESL services and they hope to report more information soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in an emailed statement Wednesday, Minister of Advanced Education Amrik Virk did not indicate the province would offer more than the one-time $10.5 million it gave to colleges across B.C. in February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur focus remains on the students, and like those students, the post-secondary institutions, and their faculties and staff, we are still waiting to hear from the federal government how it plans to go forward,\u201d Virk said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emily Jackson, Metro, May 5, 2014&#8211; Teachers will lose their jobs due to a funding shortage for Vancouver Community College\u2019s ESL program, the faculty union announced Wednesday.
