Or so two universities sheepishly say to new students in a wake of orientation disasters last year. At UBC, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2014\/05\/top-story-of-2013-2014-at-ubc-failure-of-accountability-for-sauder-rape-cheer-bced-ubcsauderschool-mba-yteubc\/\" target=\"_blank\">rape chant at the Sauder School of Business this was the <em>Ubyssey<\/em>&#8216;s top story of the year<\/a>. As it went, for the same practice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smu.ca\/webfiles\/PresidentsCouncilReport-2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Saint Mary&#8217;s University conducted an extensive investigation and issued an exhaustive report&#8211; 110 pages<\/a>. Administrators held or took accountability. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/workplace\/2013\/12\/smu-issues-extensive-rape-chant-report-ubc-shirks-accountability-for-same-ubc-ubcsauderschool-mba-bcpoli-bced-yteubc\/\" target=\"_blank\">At UBC, in\u00a0Sauder, not so much. A thin 5 page report and no mention of administration&#8211; this with a bloated leadership team at Sauder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So what happened between December 2013, report time and now late summer 2014, orientation time? Well, this summer SMU issued an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smu.ca\/webfiles\/actionreportfinal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Update from the President&#8217;s Council<\/a> and created\u00a0an Action Team. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/thecurrent\/episode\/2014\/08\/28\/frosh-week-reforms\/\" target=\"_blank\">The entire orientation culture was changed<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/reorients+frosh+events+wake+rape+chant+scandal\/10135348\/story.html?__federated=1\" target=\"_blank\">At UBC, not so much<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/reorients+frosh+events+wake+rape+chant+scandal\/10135348\/story.html?__federated=1\" target=\"_blank\">Sauder Dean Helsley said<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere has been a lot of work done in setting expectations for what is appropriate in orientation activities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>New activities are good.<\/p>\n<p>But Dean Helsley has yet&#8211; after a year&#8211; to account for his administration&#8217;s failures or announce changes at the top that might actually trim the bloat and streamline a few of the associate or assistant deans toward the undergraduate curriculum and students.
