My name is Xavier dela Cruz, and I am currently in the BCS Second Degree program at the University of British Columbia. I have acquired a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from UBC back in 2012. I have worked in laboratories as a technician, followed by working as a marketing coordinator for a retail company. Currently, I own a small wedding photography business called ‘Tea For Two Studios’, which was founded from having photography as a hobby. It has been two years since I’ve founded the company, and I have experienced amazing growth. However, I only intend keep this as a side-career.
After graduating from UBC, I have found it to be increasingly difficult to find more career opportunities in the life sciences. To address this, I wanted to pursue a degree in commerce, and have started looking for employment related to marketing and business. Luckily, I have found employment as a marketing coordinator for a retail company. However, as time went on, I developed a stronger interest in computer science – especially how software programs operated in computers and mobile phones. I realized that many of our conveniences today would be due to proper software programming in the form of desktop and mobile applications. Moreover, I admire the contributions and innovations made by companies such as HP, Microsoft, Google, Apple, for our society. Thus, I knew that pursuing a computer science degree was fulfilling this new passion.
In the next few years, I aim to become a programmer that will create accessible software which address the problems and challenges that confront today’s society. I know that each course I take in the BCS program, including English 301, are just steps towards a bigger goal. Let’s get to work!
