Book:

Michael A. Dirr, Manual of Woody Landscape Plants: Their Identification, Ornamental Characteristics, Culture, Propagation and Uses

Really useful book!

The chapter of plant morphology is very helpful to remember the terms to describe the plants. Pictures very explicit. I can also learn from the representation of the pictures in the book so that I can draw the sketches better.

All the plants are ordered alphabatically. Almost every infomation needed for landscape architects are covered in the book such as cultivation, size, texture, cultivars, etc.

However, not all plants have pictures. But basically I think this book is perfect.

websites:

Bean’s Trees and Shrubs

http://www.beanstreesandshrubs.org/

Although the website covers a wide range of plants and a lot of useful informations, it may take the reader a lot of time to find the infomation because it is written in long paragraphs.

There are no pictures in the website.

Royal Horticultural Society

https://www.rhs.org.uk/

The website is pretty helpful. The information is clearly shown. The website covers a wide range of plants.

The plant range is shown instead of USDA hardness zones. The garden usage and limiation of each plants are not mentioned. Each plant has just one picture. It’s better to have more.

Cultivars/Varieties

Dozens of cultivars are known, plus there has been a recent resurgence in the number of new introductions. The descriptions presented here attempt to summarize the most common forms.

‘Alexandra’ (Wine and Roses®, probably the same as ‘Victoria’) – Many amateur horticulturists have been taken by this new form, which offers rose-red blooms amidst a backdrop of rich, glossy burgundy leaves. It appears to be superior to other purple-foliage selections. It grows 4′-5′ tall. ‘Elvera’ (Midnight Wine™) is a brand new plant that is basically a dwarf form of ‘Alexandra’. It will mature under 3′ tall, making it useful in small gardens.

‘Brigela’ (French Lace™) – This is a new variegated form that is quickly entering the market. The green leaves are edged with a wide margin of lime green that contrasts well with the red flowers.

‘Bristol Ruby’ – This is an older cultivar very popular for its deep red flowers. It is upright-growing to 8′ tall.

‘Canary’ – A form of uncertain parentage, this new selection is notable for its light yellow blooms that fade to pink or are mixed with pink flowers on the same plant.

‘Candida’ – This is one of the more popular white-flowered forms. The blooms are set against bright green leaves on an 8′ spreading plant. ‘Bristol Snowflake’ is similar, but the blooms are slightly tinged pink and the plant is more vigorous.

‘Carnaval’ (also known as ‘Courtalor’) – One of the more unique forms available, this 4′ tall plant offers profuse quantities of red, white and pink blooms on the same plant.

‘Java Red’ (perhaps the same as ‘Foliis Purpureis’) – An old, compact form that only reaches 4′ tall and slightly wider, this plant bears deep pink blooms that open from reddish buds. The deep green foliage is tinged with purple-red.

‘Minuet’ – One of the smallest forms available, this plant only reaches 30″ tall with profuse production of red-purple flowers. The leaves also have a reddish tinge. It has shown good cold hardiness.

‘Pink Delight’ and ‘Pink Princess’ – These are two improved, popular pink-flowering forms with blooms that do not fade. They are hardy and more reduced in size, to 6′ tall and wide. ‘Sunny Princess’ is a variegated selection of ‘Pink Princess’ with a thin yellow margin on the foliage.

‘Polka’ – Considered by many authorities to be the best pink-flowered form, this Canadian development is reportedly hardy to zone 3. It is covered in late spring by deep pink blooms that adorn the arching branches to 4′ tall and wider.

‘Red Prince’ Hardy to USDA zone 4, this plant produces strong red blooms on an upright, 6′ plant. It often reblooms later in the season.

‘Rumba’ – Another form with novel leaf color, this 3′ compact selection offers yellow-green edged in purple. The flowers are red with a yellowish throat and are produced over an extended period. The plant has shown good hardiness.

‘Rubidor’ (probably the same as ‘Rubigold’) – Very popular for the contrast between flowers and foliage, this selection offers gold leaves and red blooms on a 5′-7′ plant. The color of the leaves may fade somewhat in warm summer areas.

‘Variegata’ – This is a very popular selection that offers interest all season with leaves that are edged with a creamy white margin. The blooms are rose-pink and the plant is more compact and mounded, to 6′ tall. ‘Variegata Nana’ is similar but smaller growing, perhaps to 3′ or 4′ tall.

‘White Knight’ – A popular white-flowered plant, this selection is also notable for its densely-branched, compact habit to 6′ tall and wide. It may rebloom sporadically through the summer.

Evaluation of Sources for List 3-4

C.P Lyons, Bill Merlees, Threes Shrubs and Flowers to Know in British Columbia

The pictures of the book are very helpful: first, there are coloured photos in the begining. Second, each tree or shrub has at least 3 sketches: the detail of the tree(leaves and branches), the whole shape of the tree and the map of its growing area. I like the sketches in different scales so that I can not only recognize a tree from a close distance, but also know the overall shape of the crown. And the map also shows what kind of climate the plant likes in a more obvious way.

The description of each plant is also detailed. If you find a plant you don’t know, you can try to find in the book.

However, the amout of plants it covers is not enough for this class. And it doesn’t mention the water and soil requirement, USDA hardness zone and what need to consider when growing the plants. It focuses on recognizing plants,  not on designing, planting of maintaining.

Great Plant Picks:

http://www.greatplantpicks.org/plantlists/search

The main page is a menu where I can browse all kinds of plants by certain characters, such as all cornifers, all plants have red foliage, etc. Which is very helpful in landscape designing. The website covers quite a number of plants and cultivars as well. For each plants, there are a short paragraph of succinct description and some quick facks as well as culture notes.

However, it lacks the description of flowers and fruits.

USDA Natrual Resources Conservation Service Plants Database:

http://plants.usda.gov/checklist.html

The website covers most of the plants in north America. Searching is very easy. There are many photos for each plants, which are very helpful.

The advanced search: http://plants.usda.gov/adv_search.html

is useful.

There are “related link” page for each plants. Although the infomation in the webpage itself is far from enough, by clicking on the “related link” page, I can find other infomation needed.

8.Ginkgo biloba

Common name: Ginkgo

Family name: Ginkgoaceae

Useful cultivars and selections:

Ginkgo biloba ‘Fastigiata’:Fastigiate or columnar ginkgo forms have been available in commerce for over 100 years. Nurseries often sell these forms under several different labels including Ginkgo biloba forma fastigiata, G. b. fastigiata or G. b. ‘Fastigiata’. These fastigiate forms (fastigiate meaning upward branching) typically grow 30-50′ tall with upright, narrowly conical habits that are just slightly broader at the base. ‘Fastigiata’ is an all-male cultivar. Leaves turn a uniform golden yellow in autumn (spectacular when backlit by early morning or late afternoon sun) and persist for several weeks. When the leaves do drop, they drop rapidly, forming a golden carpet around the tree.

Ginkgo biloba ‘Magyar’An introduction that is gaining momentum in the trade, this plant is a non-fruiting male with upright, ascending branching to 60′ tall and half as wide. It is well-suited to urban planting as a street tree.

Ginkgo biloba ‘Chi-Chi’ Dwarf, dense, mounded, slow-growing, multi-stemmed shrub form of the popular ginkgo tree. It typically grows to only 4-5′ tall with a fan-shaped habit and over 10 years. ‘Chi-Chi’ is a male clone. Its cultivar name translates as “breasts” in reference to unusual swellings (clusters of dormant buds) which appear on the bark of plants as they mature (usually after 10 years). Leaves turn a uniform golden yellow in autumn.

Ginkgo biloba ‘Tubifolia’ ‘Tubifolia’ (synonymous with ‘Tubiformis’ and ‘Tubeleaf’) is a tubular-leaved, slow-growing male form that typically grows to only 3-4’ tall over the first five years. It is particularly noted for having variable leaf shapes. On younger trees, leaves typically roll inward forming tube. As trees grow older, the leaves tend to flatten out, but with a more laciniate form than species leaves. This tree may eventually mature to as much as 20-25’ tall. Light green leaves turn an excellent golden yellow in fall.

Ginkgo biloba ‘Jade Butterflies’: An unusual dwarf, slow-growing form, this plant has bright green leaves and a mature height that is less than half that of standard forms. It’s an introduction out of New Zealand that is gaining popularity.

Ginkgo biloba ‘Shangri-La’ :’Shangri-La’ is a more compact well-branched tree with a full and balanced crown. It typically matures to 55′ tall and to 40′ wide. It is a male tree that was discovered in 1963 in a planting of seedlings in Urbana, Illinois by Willet N. Wandell. U. S. Plant Patent PP 5,221 was issued on April 17, 1984. Patent documents describe the unique features of this male tree as: (a) rapid compact growth habit, (b) dense full crown with balanced moderate spread, and (c) freedom from production of the foul smelling fruit produced by female plants. As with species plants, the fan-shaped leaves are rich green to blue green during the growing season, but change to an often spectacular bright yellow in fall. Dangling staminate catkins (April-May) are not ornamentally significant.

Ginkgo biloba ‘Troll’ :‘Troll’ is a dwarf shrubby cultivar that matures over time to only 3′ tall and as wide. It typically grows in a bushy mound, although it can be trained to grow as a small pyramidal tree. As with species plants, the fan-shaped leaves (biloba means two-lobed) are rich green to blue green during the growing season, but change to bright yellow in fall.

Ginkgo biloba ‘Mariken’Can‘t find description

Ginkgo biloba ‘Autumn Gold’: This male (non-fruiting) selection is common in the trade and notable for its symmetrical crown that is broad and rounded. The mature size is 50′ tall with a 30′ spread and fall color is an excellent deep yellow.

Ginkgo biloba ‘Pendula’:Plants listed under this name are quite variable, with few expressing a strong weeping habit. Most bear branches that are horizontal or droop slightly

Ginkgo biloba ‘PNI 2720’:A very popular non-fruiting male form, this form assumes an upright habit that tapers to the point. It reaches 60′ tall, but only 25’ wide.

Ginkgo biloba ‘ Saratoga’:Commonly offered, this plant has a strong central leader and an upright, narrow habit (40′ tall and 30’ tall).

Ginkgo biloba ‘ Variegata’Many different clones are offered under this name, but most feature leaves that are irregularly streaked with yellow.
